When you start exploring the islands in Windrose, you will quickly realize that it gets very dark at night, especially in caves! As your bonfire will only provide light in your base area, having access to a portable light source (Oil Lamp) becomes essential for when you venture out. Moreover, the Drowned and Thorn Fiddlers tend to start attacking out of nowhere once night falls, so every beginner needs to know how to craft and refill a Lamp in Windrose.
How to Craft an Oil Lamp and Refill It in Windrose
Crafting An Oil Lamp
To unlock the recipe for the Oil Lamp, you first need to craft yourself some Copper Ingots. Then, Combine four Copper Ingots with 1 piece of Rope at the workbench and the Lamp will be yours.
- Oil Lamp Recipe: 4 Copper Ingot and 1 Rope
Looting An Oil Lamp
To loot a lamp, make your way to Smuggler's Cache, which is on the Southern part of the island right next to where you initially spawn at the start of the game (see image above). You will find a hole in the ground covered by a pile of wood and leaves that you need to break with your Axe or Pickaxe. Once it is cleared, enter the hole and be ready to encounter a Drowned. Kill it and loot the Smuggler's Chest to get your Empty Lamp.
Refilling An Oil Lamp
To refill the lamp, you need to acquire 3 Animal Fat by killing Sows or Boars. Sows drop 1 Animal Fat when killed, while Boars drop 2, so it's better to farm the latter. Here are the steps you need to follow to refill the Lamp:
- Make your way to the Workbench with your Empty Lamp and 3 Animal Fat in your inventory.
- Click on the Refill/Repair section, where your Lamp will show up as empty.
- Click on confirm, and you will reacquire Lamp in your inventory, all topped up.
Now you can use the Lamp anywhere because it stays in your inventory and is a portable item. It will stay equipped like a tool when you click on it from your hotbar, and becomes invaluable when you’re out at night and/or exploring caves or underground ruins.
Pro Tip: The Floor-Standing Torch can be built anywhere for 2 Wood so you can also quickly construct and deconstruct these to light up caves if you wish.
