How To Beat Thomas Richards In Windrose (Revenge Is Best Served Cold)

Written by MJM - 15th April 2026

One thing that I've really been enjoying about Windrose so far is the difficulty level. It's challenging enough (on Standard) to make the battles interesting and Thomas Richard is a great example of that. If you aren't properly prepared for this fight, you might be pretty shocked at just how tough it is!

In this short guide we'll give you all of the information you need to ensure you can defeat Thomas with ease.

How To Beat Thomas Richard In Windrose: Come Prepared

This is without a doubt the most important thing that you need to take away from this guide. Because of the way that scaling works in this game, the most important thing you can do to make this fight easier is to come fully prepared. Let's break down exactly what this means.

1. Upgrade Your Gear To Level 5

The highest level you can upgrade your Gear to before you reach the next zone is Level 5. Make sure that you have upgraded your weapon, ranged weapon and all five armour pieces to Level 5 before attempting this encounter. It will make it much more manageable.

2. Equip Two Sets If You Can

The Set Bonuses you get for wearing 2x or 4x pieces of armour from the same set are very powerful. When we engaged Thomas we had:

  • 2x Pikeman Set (+160 Health)
  • 2x Privateer's Gloves (+10% Crit Chance)

As you can see these buffs are huge so they really help. You can find set pieces at various POIs around the zone or you can buy plans directly from the Faction Provisioners. Different factions sell different sets so just acquire the sets that most match your current set-up/playstyle.

3. Make Use Of Buffs

This one is probably quite obvious but at minimum you will want to have the following buffs active:

  • 2x Food Buffs
  • Rested Buff

We recommend cooking some decent food rather than eating bananas or peppers as this will have a stronger impact on your HP etc. You get your rested buff from being near your bonfire/home before setting out so make sure that's topped up.

4. Bring Supplies

Don't forget to bring plenty of:

  • Healing Potions > Bandages
  • Bullets & Gunpowder

The easiest way to fight the boss is actually using a Blunderbuss but it's unlikely you will have a tonne of gunpowder available since you can't start crafting it until the next zone. If you are in the position where you do have a lot, then make sure you have enough bullets on you too.

How To Beat Thomas Richard In Windrose: Combat Tips

So now you're fully prepared and ready to engage Thomas. Even fully prepared, you are still going to need to play well and understand his move-set in order to beat him on most difficulties. Luckily his move-set is pretty easy to learn and once you know it, the mechanics are easy to deal with.

Below we'll list out each of his moves, and how we recommend you deal with it:

Thomas' Ability How To Deal With it
Double Swing Dodge (Ctrl), Perfect Block or Run
Triple Swing Dodge (Ctrl), Perfect Block or Run
Frontal (Red Glint) Dodge (Ctrl)
Charge & Grab (Red Glint) Dodge (Ctrl) (Timing Important)
Bomb Toss Run

All of Thomas' abilities can be quite easily dealt with once you know what's coming, so just time your attacks between his ability sequences. Some quick tips for you:

  • Once you have knocked down all of his 'shields', he will become staggered and you will be able to get some free attacks off too.
  • Finally, as mentioned earlier, the Blunderbuss deals huge damage for this encounter so if you have enough Gunpowder you can solo it just using that.
  • Take your time, there's no rush and you can slowly chip him down.

Hope that helped! See you in the Foothills!
