Piastre is the main currency in Windrose and drives the entire in-game economy. You can obtain it from a bunch of different sources and use it for everything from buying plans to upgrade your ship to placing orders with Merchant Contractors so you don't have to spend your life hunting animals or chopping down trees.
In this guide we'll run through all of the different means of obtaining Piastre and advise you on the best methods.
Note: Guineas are only used to purchase cosmetic items and building sets and will not be covered in this article, as the currency has different sources and functions differently.
All Sources Of Piastre In Windrose
We'll list all of the different ways you can get Piastre in Windrose and advise on which are most efficient/reliable. Here's a quick summary table to help first:
| Method | Efficiency | Repeatability | Overall Rating |
| Completing Quests | High | Finite | B-Tier |
| Looting Piastre | Low | Finite | C-Tier |
| Naval Combat | Very High | Infinite | S-Tier |
| Selling Guineas | High | Finite | B-Tier |
| Selling to Buyers | High | Infinite | A-Tier |
1. Earning Piastre From Completing Quests
Let's start out with one of the earliest ways you can earn Piastre that also continues to be a reliable source throughout the game. Completing quests and side quests reward significant sums of Piastre, up to 300 or more in some cases, so definitely be sure to progress through the quest chains as you reach the appropriate level.

2. Looting Piastre (Chests, Skeletons, Ocean Barrels)
Sticking with methods available to you from the start of the game, another way of earning Piastre is to loot it. Right upfront we'll let you know that this is the least efficient and least reliable method of earning Piastre but it is a source nonetheless.
The Chests and Skeletons or other lootable objects that you find at POIs and the floating Barrels that you can loot as you sail through the Ocean can all contain a handful of Piastre.
3. Naval Combat: Boarding Ships
Piracy [noun]: the practise of attacking and stealing from ships at sea. This is a pirate game, and the best way to earn Piastre is to do exactly what pirates do best, steal from ships at sea. By far the most efficient and reliable way to generate Piastre in Windrose is to attack and board ships patrolling the Ocean.

In order to do so, you will need to first ensure you have the strongest ship possible. This will be a Ketch for levels 1-5, ideally a Brigantine for levels 5-10 and finally a Frigate for the late game. Next you will need to kit out your ship with the best, fully upgraded ship gear so you can take on groups of 2-3 enemy ships at once.

The key here is to find patrols which include a Transport ship or Hauler, as indicated by the golden chest appearing above their ship nameplate. Cripple the ship by taking it down to ~20% or so of it's HP and then board it and defeat the enemies to receive a lot of Piastre and other rewards. You can just sink and loot the other ships but never sink one of these Transport ships.

This was only a Level 7 Transport ship and you can see that the value of the loot (when the Medicine is sold) is worth almost 200 Piastre, for 10 minutes work.
Tip: We highly recommend ensuring that your Boarding Party Gear is at a decent level (around the level of the ships you are attacking) to make life much easier when boarding ships.
4. Selling Guineas to the Smugglers
Now we're starting to get onto the more interesting stuff. If you are like me (and I appreciate that many of you won't be) and building is secondary to you when it comes to games like this, then you are going to find this method really efficient. You can sell Guineas to the Smuggler Provisioner for 20 Piastre, either at the Smuggler main base, or in Tortuga.

You will accrue large amounts of Guineas without even trying, just by playing the game, clearing out POIs and completing quests, so this becomes a very valuable source of Piastre IF and this is an important if, you don't mind sacrificing cosmetics and buildings sets in the short-medium term.
Guineas are used to purchase decorations, building sets, style books and other cosmetic/building items from the Faction Provisioners but the good news is that you can also buy guineas for Piastre at the Smuggler Provisioner, albeit at a much worse price (50 Piastre for 1 Guinea). However keep in mind that Piastre is much more abundant in the late game.
5. Selling Items to Faction Buyers
Last but not least, another great source of obtaining Piastre throughout the entire game and especially in the mid-late game is selling items to Faction Buyers. Each of the four Factions will buy different items from you and for different prices. We've included a full list of items below including their source, the Faction Buyer and the price you'll receive.
You'll quickly note from looking at the tables below that a lot of the most valuable items are obtained from naval combat.
Note: Faction Buyers will not appear in Tortuga so you must travel to the Faction's 'main base' to do this. Some Faction main bases (like Brethren) will only appear much later in the game.
