Farming is a seriously underrated system in Windrose. Along with Merchant Contracts, it's probably the most effective system for farming critical crafting resources, allowing you to accelerate your progress and facilitating upgrades for your ship and armor for example.
How Farming Works In Windrose: Fertile Soil & Seeds
Like most of the systems in Windrose's early access state, the farming system is pretty simple and easy to understand, if not really explained. Farming allows you to build out your own farm at your base where you can grow pretty much any plant or flower that is collectible from the various zones. You will need two things:
- Fertile Soil (to plant seedbeds)
- Plant Seeds (to plant in the seedbeds)
Where to find Fertile Soil in Windrose
Fertile Soil can be found in small 'beds' alongside various ruins throughout the Foothills and Cursed Swamps. You can reliably find it at Ancient Farms, such as the Foothills Ancient Farm shown in the image below.
It's really easy to get a lot of Fertile Soil just by visiting a couple of these Ancient Farms or Ruins, so you won't need to spend long farming it. You need 5x Fertile Soil for every 'square' of seedbed that you plant back at home. Next, we'll need seeds.
Where to find Seeds in Windrose
You have a chance to collect seeds whenever you harvest a plant or flower in Windrose, or when you chop down trees (banana, palm, ficus etc). This does mean that to build up your farm, you will need to go out and harvest the resource yourself first.
How Farming Works In Windrose: Building Your Farm
Now that you have the Fertile Soil and Seeds sorted, you can build and plant the farm of your dreams. To plant Seedbeds, simple open the Building Menu (B) and navigate to the Farming tab. The first 'building' you see will be the Seedbed which can be constructed for 5x Fertile Soil. You can plant four seeds/saplings in each Seedbed, planting them at each corner.
Next, simply select the seeds you want to plant and drop them in. Seeds take about 1-1.5h (will update with exact timing once known) to grow into plants/trees that you can harvest and they always return the seeds to you. This means if you plant 25 seeds, you'll get 25 seeds back when you harvest them.
This is super important because it means once you have enough seeds, you have an infinite source of whatever plant material you are looking for.
Best Seeds To Plant In Windrose: Flax Sapling Farm
Without a doubt, the first 'farm' you are going to want to set up in Windrose is a Flax Fiber farm. Flax Fiber is required to create Linen Fabric at the Spinning Wheel and Linen Fabric is used for everything from armor to Boarding Party Gear to constructing better ships.
At a minimum I'd say you want to set up a farm of ~15-20 Flax Saplings and just harvest and replant it whenever you can. Outside of that it's really optional depending on what you need for creating food.
