Introduction

Welcome to our Heroic & Mythic Guide for Nymrissa Wavecaller, the Midnight Season 2 Lair boss within The Tidebound Grotto. This guide covers the fight mechanics and the strategy we recommend to defeat this boss on Heroic and Mythic difficulty!

Somewhere between Ny'alotha and the ocean floor, someone looked at the Uu'nat model, slapped a coat of seawater on it, and now, Water Uu'nat has arrived. She's got the tentacles, she's got the grotto, she's got an entire murloc fan club willing to hurl themselves into a bubble on command, and she is absolutely convinced this performance is getting her the lead role.

Method Boss Review

As a Lair boss she's a good showcase for the format: one relaxed, tuned boss with several tasks the raid has to juggle, but unlike Rotmire where one badly placed mushroom wipes the whole raid, you have a lot more control over this fight before it ever gets bad. Add slips through, orb gets soaked late, someone eats a whirlpool, none of it is instantly fatal, and you have room to recover.

With the intention of serving as an entry boss for pugs and less experienced guilds, it hits the mark. Approachable, forgiving, and a clean introduction to the kind of room management the harder fights demand later.

Method Boss Rating: (4/5)

Easy Mode

  • The fight is the Alluring Bubble loop. Stop murlocs before they reach the bubble, or they become Berserkers that pulse raid damage.
  • Water indicators show each spawn's size. Bring the boss to the biggest spawn, ranged handle the single ones.
  • [MYTHIC] Kill the Bubblefin Frostscale first, its Waterfog Shield makes nearby murlocs take 99% less damage.
  • Swirling Whirlpools spawn with one gap. Stack in the gap.
  • Pop! is a raid hit plus knockback. Healer cooldown for it, and don't get thrown into the water (sharks).
  • Frost Orb from Chilling Frost are a mandatory soak on Heroic/Mythic, or they Shatter for a huge hit and DoT. Tanks and mobile/immune players are ideal. [MYTHIC] soaking also bursts the raid, so spread the timing.
  • Swap tanks on Water Jet stacks. Use the jet to wash away Lingering Frost.
  • Two soft/hard clocks: Wavecaller's Might ramps her damage, Unending Tides is the enrage. Keep the loop tight and kill her before either lands.

Mechanics

Alluring Bubble Mechanic Icon

Alluring Bubble

Nymrissa forms a massive bubble that entrances nearby murlocs and pulls them toward it. Everything in the fight feeds into or cleans up after this.

Bubblefin Shorerunner Mechanic Icon

Bubblefin Shorerunner

The basic murlocs. They swarm toward the bubble, and any that reach it get upgraded, so stop them before they do.

Bubblefin Berserker Mechanic Icon

Bubblefin Berserker

A murloc that makes it into the bubble transforms into a Berserker. This is the failed state of add control. They pulse raid-wide Frost damage every 3 seconds while alive (Pulsing Tides).

A couple of these landing during Abyssal Rain or a Pop! is a wipe, so kill them on sight.

Bubblefin Frostscale Mechanic Icon

Bubblefin Frostscale

MYTHIC ONLY

A deepwater murloc that joins the swarm and shields the others, reducing nearby murlocs' damage taken by 99%. Kill the Frostscale first or your add damage does nothing.

Swirling Whirlpools Mechanic Icon

Swirling Whirlpools

Nymrissa spawns whirlpools around the room that surge toward the bubble, dealing enormous Frost damage to anyone in their path. They leave exactly one gap to stand in.

Pop! Mechanic Icon

Pop!

When a whirlpool reaches the bubble, it pops for a raid-wide Frost hit and a knockback.

It is predictable, so use a planned healer cooldown plus a positioning check. If you get knocked into the water, the sharks will eat you.

Chilling Frost Mechanic Icon

Chilling Frost

Hits several players for Frost damage and a 6 second slow, dropping a Frost Orb at the player's location.

Stutterstepping places the orb in a controlled line, but is not mandatory, it just makes it easier for you to soak.

Frost Orb Mechanic Icon

Frost Orb

Touching it clings it to you for heavy Frost damage, a stacking DoT, and 20% increased Frost damage taken for 16 seconds. It leaves Lingering Frost where it was picked up. This is an icy patch that ticks Frost damage and makes players slide, so keep it off your paths and away from the bubble.

On Heroic and Mythic these are a mandatory soak.

Frost Burst Mechanic Icon

Frost Burst

MYTHIC ONLY

A touched Frost Orb bursts for raid-wide Frost damage, forcing you to do controlled pops, making sure the raid is healthy enough for the cleanup.

Shatter Mechanic Icon

Shatter

An untouched Frost Orb explodes for massive raid-wide Frost damage plus a stacking 30 second DoT. This is why orbs must be soaked, not dodged.

Water Jet Mechanic Icon

Water Jet

Tank mechanic. A high-pressure jet dealing sustained Frost damage and pushing the target away, stacking 20% increased Water Jet damage taken for 35 seconds.

It also washes away icy patches, so the tank can aim it to clean Lingering Frost. Tank swap before the stacking damage-taken amp gets too dangerous.

Abyssal Rain Mechanic Icon

Abyssal Rain

A 4 second raid-wide channel, plus a lingering drench DoT.

This is a Healing check, and is dangerous if it overlaps Berserker pulses (Pulsing Tides) or a Pop!.

Wavecaller's Might Mechanic Icon

Wavecaller's Might

A stacking 3% Frost damage buff on Nymrissa. This is the fight’s soft enrage.

Unending Tides Mechanic Icon

Unending Tides

Unending Tides is the hard enrage for the fight. Relentless raid-wide Frost damage every second until you die.

Kill her before it channels.

Strategy

Everything orbits the Alluring Bubble. She spawns it, murlocs swarm it, whirlpools pop it, and you deal with the burst. Your entire setup exists to make sure the fewest possible murlocs reach that bubble before it pops.

Assign add duty before the pull. When the Bubblefin Shorerunners swarm, they need to be stopped before reaching the bubble. You will see indicators in the water for how many will spawn from that spot. You want to bring the boss to the one with the most adds, and you want ranged players to take care of the single spawns.

Any Crowd Control (CC) ability can be used on them, so press whatever is necessary to stop them from reaching the bubble.

If Berserkers do spawn, they jump to the top of the kill order instantly. Pulsing Tides from one of them landing during Abyssal Rain or a Pop! is the most common way this fight wipes a group. Really avoid having them spawn, and if they do, kill them very fast.

Mythic Difficulty: Kill the Frostscale First

On Mythic, the swarm includes a Bubblefin Frostscale that is projecting Waterfog Shield, which makes every nearby murloc take 99% less damage. If you cleave into the swarm without dealing with the Frostscale, you're doing nothing.

Assign the Bubblefin Frostscale as the highest priority target the moment it appears, drop the shield, then clean up the rest.

Whirlpools and the Pop!

Swirling Whirlpools happen just after you finish dealing with the Shorerunners. Several whirlpools will appear around the room, with exactly one gap in between them. Run to the gap as quickly as you can and stack as a group.

When a whirlpool reaches the bubble, Pop! goes off: a raid-wide damage hit plus a knockback. This is fully predictable, so pre-plan two things:

  • First, a healing cooldown for the burst of damage.
  • Second, and this is where groups quietly die, your knockback position. Do not stand where the Pop! would throw you into the water, as you will be eaten by sharks.

Note: You can cancel the knockback by using the Warlock Gateway as soon as it hits the bubble, or just stand closer to the bubble to not get knocked into the water, sharks will eat you!

Handling the Ice

Chilling Frost drops Frost Orb on players, and on Heroic and Mythic these are a mandatory soak because of Shatter.

Leaving an orb alone means a massive raid damage hit plus a stacking 30 second DoT, which is far deadlier than the controlled damage of soaking it. So orbs get picked up, not dodged. Tank is great for this, or other mobile classes with a strong defensive or immunity.

On Mythic difficulty soaking an orb triggers Frost Burst (raid-wide damage). Whereas, on Heroic it just leaves Lingering Frost where you grab it. So, soak them in a planned way on Mythic: assign the pickups, spread the timing so you're not bursting several at once into other raid damage. And generally don’t place the Lingering Frost in the way or too close to the bubble.

Your tanks can help here too. Water Jet washes away the Lingering Frost icy patches, so the active tank can aim the pushback across a bad Lingering Frost patch to clean the floor. Swap tanks on the Water Jet stacks before the amp gets dangerous.

The Two Fight Enrage Timers

There's no add that ends the fight on a timer, but two things are quietly racing you.

Wavecaller's Might stacks Nymrissa Wavecaller’s Frost damage higher the longer you take, so sloppy, slow pulls get harder on their own.

Unending Tides is the hard enrage: once it channels, it's a non-stop raid-wide beating until someone dies.

Both point to the same conclusion, do the fight mechanics well and don't let the fight drag on too long. Clean add control is what buys you the tempo to kill her before either of the clocks run out.
