Raid Setup
Introduction
Welcome to our Heroic Vashnik the Malignant guide, a boss fight in The Venomous Abyss Raid in Midnight Season 2. This guide covers the fight mechanics and the strategy we recommend to defeat this boss on Heroic difficulty!
Picture the Chamber of Virulence as the Special edition season of Hell’s Kitchen, and Vashnik as the line cook who's been working on a world-ending dish for years and still hasn't plated a single one. The Vashnik fight boils down to kill the adds before they reach the pool, and put this man out of his misery before dinner service ruins us all.
Fight Style: Single Target with add control
Recommended Setup: 2x Tank / 4x Healer / 14x DPS
Required utilities: CC for Shadow and Fire adds, staggered dispels for Exploding Infection
Hero/Lust usage: On Pull
Video Guide
Easy Mode
General:
- Imbibe at 100 energy: Vashnik drinks the two nearest fountains, gaining their adds and infection type plus a permanent stack of Toxic Vapor (the soft enrage).
- Tanks control the fight by walking the boss to the right fountains.
- Default order: Blood + Shadow / Shadow + Fire / Fire + Blood, repeat. Always one new fountain per cycle.
- Every add must die before it reaches the center pool. One arrival is a raid-wide Malignant Burst DoT, more than one is usually a wipe. Adds go CC immune and speed up after 60 seconds, so kill on spawn.
Per Fountain:
- Blood: Clotting Venom, CC immune, splits on death, kill every piece. Infection = Siphoning, leech in the circle to beat the healing block.
- Shadow: Shrouded Venom, CC-able, leaves dodge circles on death. Infection = Stygian, healable, spread out for the bursts.
- Fire: two Burning Venom, pulse raid damage, stacking explosion on death, so kill staggered. Infection = Exploding, stagger dispels, never at low raid HP.
Passives all fight:
- Dripping Fangs: tank swap every cast (100% physical amp).
- Malignant Catalyst: cover every bile soak, uncovered = big raid hit.
- Plague Froth: affected spread out, dodge the plus-shaped waves.
- Kill the boss before Toxic Vapor stacks pile too high.
Mechanics
Imbibe (Whole Fight)
At 100 energy, Vashnik drinks from the two nearest fountains. This does three things at once: it hits the whole raid, it gives him a stack of Toxic Vapor, and each drained fountain erupts and spawns Living Venom that starts crawling towards the Malignant Cavity in the center.
Because he drinks from the nearest two, your tanks maneuver the boss between Imbibe to pick which fountains get drained and avoid the nastiest pairings. Where you park him is the single most important decision in the fight.
Malignant Burst (Fail Condition)
If any living venom reaches the Malignant Cavity, it bursts, hitting the entire raid hard plus a stacking 30 second DoT.
Multiple venom arriving means multiple stacking bursts, which is how this fight ends abruptly.
So every venom that spawns must die before it reaches the middle. Someone is always watching the closest one.
Toxic Vapor
Every Imbibe adds a stack of Toxic Vapor, permanent raid-wide Nature damage that ticks harder each time.
This is the fight's soft enrage. The longer Vashnik lives, the more Imbibe happen, and the more the room itself hurts. Healers, this only ever gets worse.
Venom Fountains
Each fountain empowers Vashnik with an Infusion buff for 90 seconds when drained, stacking, which boosts its matching expulsion damage and the health of its venom adds. Each fountain also produces a different living venom with its own death effect:
Fountain of Blood (Clotting Venom): Protected by Sanguineous Fortitude, meaning it's immune to crowd control until dead, so no slows or stuns to stop it, you just have to burn it. When it dies it splits into smaller Clotting Venoms via Splitting Clot.
Fountain of Shadow (Shrouded Venom): Wrapped in a Miasmic Coating that absorbs 100% of its health, so effectively you kill it twice. When destroyed it bursts with Umbral Ejection that you need to dodge.
Fountain of Flame (Burning Venom): Pulses raid-wide Fire damage the entire time it's alive through Burning Presence, so it's the priority kill of the three. On death it explodes with Caustic Surge, hitting the raid, and on Heroic that explosion leaves a stacking DoT. Kill them spaced out in time, not all at once.
One more fountain note: after 60 seconds, any venom still alive gets Hardened Venom, becoming CC immune and 50% faster.
Malignant Catalyst
Vashnik congeals an orb over the Cavity and detonates it, hitting the raid and launching Catalytic Bile around the room. Each bile splashes players within 6 yards, and if a bile lands with nobody near it, the whole raid eats a bigger hit instead.
So these are soft soaks, make sure each impact has someone in range without stacking the whole raid on one.
Plague Froth
Vashnik coats several players in corrosive venom, ticking on anyone within 5 yards for 8 seconds. When it expires, Plague Wave erupt from that player in the four cardinal directions, dealing heavy damage to anyone the lines hit.
So affected players spread away from the raid, and everyone stays mindful of the cross-shaped wave that follows. Standard spread mechanic with a plus-sign twist.
Adaptive Infection
This is where the active fountains bite you a second time. Vashnik infects several players with toxins matching his current infusions, so the infection type changes depending on which fountains he's been drinking. There are three flavors:
Siphoning Infection (Blood): A Shadow DoT that absorbs a big chunk of incoming healing and reduces healing received to zero while it lasts. The infected also periodically cast Siphon Blood, damaging nearby allies while healing themselves off them. So this one self-heals through the absorb, but only if people are standing in the circle.
Stygian Infection (Shadow): Same healing absorb, but instead of self-healing it periodically erupts with Stygian Burst, hitting players within 6 yards. So these players spread out, the opposite of the Blood version.
Exploding Infection (Flame): A Fire DoT that, when removed, blows up with Caustic Explosion and hits the whole raid. This one is a dispel-timing question, not a positioning one. Coordinate dispels so you're not detonating several at once into an already busy moment.
Because the infection depends on the active fountains, reading which two Vashnik last drank from tells you which infection is about to go out. This is the core skill of the fight.
Dripping Fangs
The tank mechanic. Vashnik bites his target for big Physical damage plus a Nature DoT, and stacks a 100% increased Physical damage taken debuff for 32 seconds.
That's a brutal amp, so tanks swap well before it gets dangerous.
Strategy
Vashnik is a single phase fight built around three fountains and one energy bar. The fountains are Blood, Shadow and Flame, and whichever two he drinks from decides what your next minute looks like. There are no adds spawning from thin air here, everything comes from the fountains, so controlling his position controls the fight.
Set your Fountain Rotation First
Everything starts with the drinking order. Vashnik always drinks from the two nearest fountains, so the tanks decide the whole fight by where they hold him.
The clean default order for Heroic Vashnik Fountains is:
- Blood + Shadow
- Shadow + Fire
- Fire + Blood
- Repeat

The logic is one new fountain per cycle, one carried over. This keeps you from ever double-stacking the same Infusion into a lethal expulsion, and it means your raid always knows the next add and infection type in advance instead of scrambling to read it live.
Assign one tank to physically walk the boss to the correct fountain pair before each Imbibe, and have that call made out loud every time.
If the boss drinks the wrong pair once, it's recoverable. If your rotation drifts, you end up with a triple-buffed fountain and a dead raid.
Add Control is the Real Fight
Every add walks toward the pool, and a single Malignant Burst is a raid-wide DoT you did not need.
Set up two things before pull:
- A dedicated add-kill group that always turns to face the newest spawns. The pool is center, adds come from the fountains, so the geometry is predictable, they always path inward.
- A reminder that the 60 second Hardened Venom timer is real. Adds you leave alive "for later" become CC immune sprinters. There is no later. Kill on spawn.

Per fountain, the execution differs:
Blood (Clotting Venom): no CC exists on these, so it's pure burn. Cleave the splits down immediately, and don't let a stray small one wander off while you swap targets. Count them out if you have to.
Shadow (Shrouded Venom): these can be CC'd, so lock the extras while you clear the priority ones, but respect the death circles from Umbral Ejection. Kill them where you want the circles, not wherever they happen to be.
Fire (Burning Venom): the dangerous pair. They pulse raid damage while alive and drop a stacking explosion on death. CC one, nuke the other, then kill the second as the first explosion's debuff falls off. Never let both die together.

Handle Infections by Reading the Fountain
The active fountains tell you which Adaptive Infection is coming, so pre-assign your response instead of reacting.
Blood (Siphoning Infection): Infected players need bodies in their circle to leech through the healing block. Decide in advance whether your raid feeds the siphon by grouping up or eats the absorb, and make it the same call every time so healers aren't guessing.

Shadow (Stygian Infection): Healable, but the infected players should spread out so Stygian Burst doesn't clip the raid. This is a movement job, not a healing emergency.
Fire (Exploding Infection): The only one that's purely about dispel timing. Stagger the dispels, and hold them entirely if the raid is sitting low. A dispel here is a raid-wide hit, treat it like one.
The Passive Damage Checklist
These happen no matter which fountains are up, so they're your baseline routine:
- Dripping Fangs: hard tank swap every cast, the 100% physical amp is not something you tank through twice.
- Malignant Catalyst: cover every Catalytic Bile impact with at least one body. An uncovered bile punishes the whole raid, so spread to catch them rather than stacking.
- Plague Froth: affected players get out, then everyone respects the plus-shaped Plague Wave. Spread early, the wave direction is fixed to cardinal, so line yourself off the axes.

Beat the Soft Enrage
Toxic Vapor never stops climbing, so every extra Imbibe is permanent raid damage you'll be healing for the rest of the pull. There's no mechanic to save you from a long kill here, only a cleaner one.
The raid groups that struggle on Vashnik almost always struggle because add leaks and messy infections cost them time, not because the damage checks are tight. Keep the rotation honest, keep the pool empty, and the Vapor never gets the chance to win.
