How To Unlock and Upgrade the Altar of Corrosion in WoW Midnight

Written by Tayder - 10th August 2026

The Altar of Corrosion is a new player power system that has been released in WoW Midnight, Patch 12.1. Unlike most of the player power systems seen so far in the Midnight Expansion, the Altar of Corrosion will only benefit you while doing outdoor content. Meaning that any effects you unlock will not be active while you are inside instanced content like Dungeons, Raids and PvP.

The Altar of Corrosion will also allow you to unlock new Corrosive Codex Powers. Similar to the Altar of Corrosion effects, the Corrosive Powers that you select will also not work inside of most instanced content like Raids, PvP and Dungeons however, they will help you inside of Delves and The Coiled Isle zone.

How To Unlock the Altar of Corrosion

To unlock the Altar of Corrosion and start gaining new abilities you will need to complete the quest, Vaults Of Atal'utek: One Coin Too Many. This quest can be found inside of the Vaults of Atal’Utek, near the Northern Amani Bulwark Flight Point.

This quest will send you to Er’inye who will teach you more about the Altar of Corrosion and will offer a new quest to Corrode your soul, allowing you to earn Spirit Corrosions needed to unlock new abilities and upgrade the Altar of Corrosion tree.

Upgrading the Altar of Corrosion

Once you have unlocked the Altar of Corrosion you can now start upgrading it.

To upgrade the Altar of Corrosion you will need Spirit Corrosions, you can earn these from various sources listed in the table below.

Spirit Corrosions Amount Spirit Corrosions Source
4 Discoveries (1 Spirit Corrosion per Discovery)
2 Zul’jarra’s Forces Renown 8 and 14
1 Corrosive Coin Hand in (Corrode Spirit)

You can only unlock Spirit Corrosions from Discoveries and Zul’jarra’s Forces Renown once, but the Corrosive Coin hand-in can be done as many times as you want, the only limitation is having enough Corrosive Coins.

How to Collect Spirit Corrosions for the Altar of Corrosion

Corrosive Coins (Corrode Spirit)

One way to acquire the Spirit Corrosions required to upgrade the Altar of Corrosion is to speak with Er’inye and select the Corrode Spirit option, this will give you Corrosive Spirits in exchange for Corrosive Coins, that you can then spend in the Altar of Corrosion tree.

Er’inye is located in front of the Altar of Corrosion, in the Armani Foothold.

To corrode your spirit you will need to gather Corrosive Coins. There is no time-gating to how quickly you can upgrade the Altar of Corrosion, with the only limit being the amount of Corrosive Coins you will need to collect for each Corrode Spirit.

Each time you Corrode your spirit it will cost you even more Corrosive Coin, while it isn’t much of an issue at the start it can quickly become overwhelming looking at the amount of Corrosive Coins you will need to collect.

Zul’jarra’s Forces Renown

Luckily there are other ways you can gain Spirit Corrosions. You will be able to gain 2 extra Spirit Corrosions for free by earning reputation with the Zul’jarra’s Forces Renown. Unlocking at Renown Levels 8 and 14.

Discoveries

You can also earn 4 more free Spirit Corrosions by finding and unlocking the Altar of Corrosion Discoveries found across the Vaults of Atal’Utek.
