Dune Awakening - How to get Spice and What it Does

Written by Geekmandem - 2nd June 2025

In Dune Awakening, Spice might not be the name of the game but it’s certainly the most important part of it. While our interactions with it are limited early on, it becomes a key part of the late game.

When it comes to Dune as a story, the Spice plays a key role in how the story progresses. This is no different in Dune Awakening where Spice will take centre stage, as a key resource.

As we start out, Spice will be used as a way to expand the story through solo scenarios after the player finds it when prompted. Later, Spice will take on a more important role, where Spice addiction will start to become a problem. This guide will go over all the ways Spice works, how to find it, and what the deal is.

Dune Awakening – What Is Spice and How Does It Work?

If you're playing Dune: Awakening, you've probably heard one thing over and over: control the spice, control everything. It's not just a line from the books; it’s a key reason for why we are here. In the game, Spice really is the key to power. Whether you're looking to dominate in PvP, craft better gear, or build up your base, it all starts with Spice.

Spice (also called Melange) is the most valuable resource on Arrakis. It’s rare, it’s powerful, and everyone wants it. In gameplay terms, sSpice drives the entire economy. You need it for crafting, upgrading your character, and trading. But it’s not just something you farm casually. It’s risky. And because it shows up in contested areas, it often leads to fights, both small skirmishes and big faction wars.

You can also get addicted to Spice via short-term buffs, but more on that later.

How Do You Get Spice?

Spice comes from Spice Blooms. These appear randomly across the desert. They don’t last long, and the good ones often show up in dangerous places. When a Spice bloom appears, players have to move fast. You need to get there, deploy a harvester, and hold your ground. And you’re not the only one trying.

Deploying a harvester isn’t easy. First, you need to have the right blueprint and parts, and then you craft it. When you go to deploy, you’ll need protection; either bring friends or be ready to fight. Other players can attack you. Storms or sandworms can wreck your gear. If your harvester gets destroyed, you lose everything.

The Sandworm Problem

Large Spice blooms often attract sandworms. If you’ve seen the movies or read the books, you know the deal: these things are massive and deadly. The game sticks close to that idea, loud operations, long drilling times, that’s what draws them in. You either stay quiet and quick, or risk getting eaten.

You can try to build defences or time your harvests better. But in some zones, you just won’t have time. The worms come fast. It's one of the reasons spice runs are tense. You're not just watching the map, you're listening for rumbling.

Why PvP Zones Matter

Spice blooms often show up in PvP areas. Some of these zones (Deep Desert) allow full loot, which means if you die, you lose everything you were carrying. But these areas also have the biggest rewards. Factions will fight to hold spice-rich zones. And in Dune Awakening, holding land means controlling trade routes, access to resources, and the ability to tax other players.

It’s not just about combat. It’s about planning. A good faction needs to control the Spice flow. If you can’t defend your harvests, someone else will take them. This is where guilds start to matter, with those likely being key for the control of Spice.

What Do You Do With the Spice?

Raw spice is pretty much useless until you process it. This happens in your base with processors or extraction stations. Processing takes energy and gear, and it can draw attention. Raiders might target you if they find out you’ve got a lot of spice stored.

Once refined, spice can be used for crafting high-end tech, upgrading weapons, improving your gear, or selling on the market. Prices go up and down based on how much spice is out there, which areas are under control, and how active the harvest zones are.

Spice Addiction Is a Thing

If you use spice to boost your stats, like giving yourself temporary perks or combat bonuses, there’s a catch. Your character can get addicted. Over time, this messes with your stats if you don’t manage it. You’ll need to make choices. Use spice for short-term gains and risk addiction, or stay clean and fall behind? It's a balance that all players will have to consider.

Withdrawal effects can hit hard, but the benefits can be big. Better vision, faster reflexes, and more awareness in fights. The reward is very much there if you want to risk it.

Spice and the Bigger Picture

Spice isn’t just a resource, it’s part of the story. In the Dune universe, Spice allows for visions, deep insight, and even glimpses of the future. The game reflects that, too. You’ll find missions and abilities that tie into the lore. Some paths your character can follow are shaped by how you use spice, or how deep you go into the addiction system.

Spice in Dune Awakening is more than just loot. It’s tied to every system in the game: combat, crafting, politics, and economy. If you want to be strong, you’ll need to understand how spice works, how to get it, and when to risk it.

When the time comes, we’ll update this guide or have a more dedicated guide to how Spice works in the end game.
