Before Season 1 of the Midnight WoW Expansion launches, Veteran Dawncrests are the highest Crest that you can collect. These are used to increase the item level of your gear from 233 up to 246. You have a cumulative cap of 200 Veteran Crests per week.
Veteran Dawncrests can be earned from several sources including Seasonal Heroic Dungeons, Hard Mode Prey or Delves Tier 5 to 6, although some of these sources are capped at how many Veteran Crests you can earn per week.
Disclaimer: The in-game tooltip claims they drop from Seasonal Heroic Dungeons, however, I haven’t personally received any from Heroic Dungeons.
However, by far the fastest and repeatable way to farm Veteran Dawnscrests is by doing Random Hardmode Prey.
Doing Prey for Veteran Dawncrests
Random Hard difficulty Prey is unlocked on the Prey Journey at level 2, to get to this level you will need to complete 1 Normal difficulty Prey and then 2 Hard difficulty Prey.
Once you have fulfilled these requirements, you can speak to Astalor Bloodsworn who will have the option to start a random Prey and then select a difficulty (you need to select the Hard difficulty); this will cost 50 Remnant of Anguish, but you usually earn more than this from completing the Prey.
Once you complete the Prey you will get to choose one of four rewards, which includes 15 Veteran Dawncrests.
To do this quickly we recommend doing the Prey specific world quest that spawns with each Prey, then find the traps on the floor and click them for Prey progress, making sure to deal with any ambushes as they will also progress your hunt.
As a nice bonus if you fly past a rare on your way to the prey world quest, make sure to kill them for additional Prey progress.
Once you have located the Prey Boss, kill them and then select the Veteran Crest reward. You can then take the portal that spawns back to Astalor to select a new hunt.
On average completing one of these Prey events takes 7-10 mins and rewards 15 Veteran Dawncrests.
We also recommend setting your Hearthstone to Zul’Aman as this is the hardest zone to get to and you can use the Key to the Arcantina to get back to Silvermoon.
