Crimson Desert's map size has been a hot topic ahead of release on March 19th, 2026, with comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, and The Witcher 3. So with Crimson Desert now just around the corner, how big is the continent of Pywel?
Developer Pearl Abyss has given us a lot of information through video reveals and interviews. While the scale of the world has been mentioned, it's the level of interactivity in the world that could define Crimson Desert's legacy. We'll take a look at the world of Pywel in this article, with all the info we have. Have no fear, Crimson Desert is much more than a mile wide and an inch deep.
How Big Is The Crimson Desert Map?

In an interview with Gaming Interviews, Will Powers, the creative director of Pearl Abyss, had this to say:
"I don't think numbers really do it justice because, how big is that in terms of scope and scale? “But what we can say is that the world's at least twice as big as the open world, the playable area, of Skyrim. It's larger than the map of Red Dead Redemption 2."
This gives us a pretty good idea of how large Crimson Desert is. To estimate, you could place it somewhere between 80 and 110 km2 (30 -42 mi2). As Will Powers has said, the numbers don't matter; the aim for the studio is on the "density of interactivity."
| Game | Estimated Playable Map Area |
| Skyrim | 37km2 (14mi2) |
| Red Dead Redemption | 75km2 (29mi2) |
| Crimson Desert | 80-110 km2 (30 -42 mi2) |
The 5 Major Regions of Pywel
The continent of Pywel is vast, with the map being seamless. The world is split into five key regions, each with its own political ways, ecosystems, and unique biomes.
- Hernand: The first area players will spend time in, Hernand is full of cities, mountains, and lush green fields. It's the classic high-fantasy "European" area. It also comes with as much political intrigue and struggles for power as Europe during the medieval period.
- Pailune: The harsh Northern area of the map, this is where Kliff and the Greymanes originate. The area is full of deep snow and hard-to-traverse mountain areas.
- Demeniss: Demeniss is the seat of power in the Pywell region and a major military staging ground.
- Delesyia: Is the leading light of the region when it comes to technology and science. Lots of mechanical creatures and out-of-this-world things on display in Delesyia.
- The Crimson Desert: The zone the game is based on, the baron desert of crimson sand is an arid expanse of red sands and lawlessness.

Travelling the World: Traversal & Mounts
With talk of the world being so large, how you travel around is a huge part of Crimson Desert. Developers have claimed that it takes roughly two hours to cross the entire map on horseback. There are a few other ways to traverse the world of Crimson Desert:
- Mounts: Horses, bears, Lizards/raptors, and many more
- Aerial Travel: Dragon riding and flight are also a large part of the game. Likely a later element to travel.
- Character Specific Travel: Damiane, one of the playable characters, has her own glide mechanic, which makes her a unique option in the open world. This "Umbrella" lets her both float and propel herself in the air. Kliff also has his own form of this with his Black Crow (a smoky dash/glide). Thanks to Dwarven technology, there is also a Mech you can travel on.
- Fast Travel: Fast travel points are on the map, letting you travel to specific spots that you have unlocked. For example, your home base in Greymane camp.
- Vertical Travel: The game also allows you to "climb on almost any vertical surface", and Kliff has some sort of grapple hook.
A "Systemic" World: Built on the BlackSpace Engine

Pearl Abyss has been very clear about all the talk around "world size." Pywell isn't a big empty world; it's a world full of events. In fact, in an interview, it was stated that the game's BlackSpace Engine couldn't handle the level of interaction they wanted, so it had to be majorly updated to allow for it.
Speaking about the BlackSpace Engine, Will Powers said:
“Off-the-shelf engines weren’t able to deliver the uncompromised vision that the developers set forth to create with this game. So, they needed to create their own engine [BlackSpace] in order to deliver on that vision.”
- Dynamic Events: The world is full of "systemic" NPCs, meaning they have lives and routines. This means that if you free a town from an attack or destroy a bridge leading to it. You'll leave a lasting impact on that town or area. This can include new NPCs moving to the town and opening up trade routes.
- Side Content: As with any modern RPG, Crimson Desert is full of side quests and content you can do. This ranges from fishing to delivering goods to people in need and everything in between.

Crimson Desert is set to be a huge RPG, and with everything we've seen and heard so far, it's going to be another benchmark for what a big single-player RPG can do. We saw Witcher 3 move the needle, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 made a big splash in 2025. Can Crimson Desert be the "AAA" RPG to do the same in 2026?
