World of Warcraft 20th Anniversary Event Overview

Written by Roguery - 25th October 2024

Starting on October the 22nd through January 6th 2025, World of Warcraft is celebrating its 20th year anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, we are getting a much bigger anniversary in-game event than usual, with a range of new fun content, currencies and rewards to collect.

Here is a brief overview of what to expect, and links to some of our other guides that will help guide you through some of the activities the event has to offer.

Starting the Celebration

The celebration event will pop up automatically on any character, level 10 and higher, in the form of a quest called “Another Timely Invitation”.

The quest will point you to the Caverns of Time in Tanaris, to where you can go by using the Caverns of Time portal from the portal rooms of both Orgrimmar (lower portal room) and Stormwind. After taking the portal to Caverns of Time, head to the middle of the event area and hand in the quest to Yllana, who will now give you a string of quests to teach you about the activities of the event.

Event Currencies

Most of the rewards for the event will be purchased with Bronze Celebration Tokens, Timewarped Relic Coffer Keys and Timewarped Badges. There are a range of vendors that sell many new and some returning items, mounts, pets, toys and more. You can earn these currencies through daily quests, weekly quests, clearing the Blackrock Depths Raid and participating in the activities of the anniversary event.

We have guides for each of these currencies to help you find the vendors, what they have to offer and how to collect more of the currency you need:

Activities

In the Anniversary Event area there are three activities which you can participate in; they are Mount Mania, Story Time and Fashion Frenzy. However, they are only up one at a time, and rotate every 15 minutes in the order list above, but with a Story Time between each of the others.

You can see which activity is active by an indicator at the top of the screen.

Fashion Frenzy

This is similar to the Trial of Style event; players are given a category and get a few minutes to dress up to fit that theme, by using appearances from their wardrobe. After which, players vote on who dressed the best to crown a winner.

Everyone who participates gets progress towards the weekly quest, and the winner gets nothing extra.

Story Time

Lorewalker Cho will act out stories of the past on stage, and you must sit on a bench and watch. Once in a while the audience is required to participate by pressing an extra action button, pressing the extra action button counts as progress towards the weekly quest. So participating in the event with the extra action button is required.

Mount Mania

This is an event to show off your mount collection. An NPC, Abigail Cyrildotr, will mount 15 mounts in a row and your objective is to mount that same mount, if you have it. You can join in at any point, and you gain one point for each match you get. Whoever gets the most matches wins. Everyone who participated gains progress towards the weekly quest, and the winner gets nothing extra.

There are 2 achievements for this event:

  • I Have That One, for matching a single mount.
  • Mount Master, for matching 20 mounts, which does not need to be done consecutively.

Guest Relations

Starting on October the 28th you will be able to participate in Guest Relations, which is a sequel to Secrets of Azeroth. To start it, you will need to speak to Alyx in the main celebration event area and follow her questline. Each week will bring new secrets and more quests.

Korrak’s Revenge

The Korrak’s Revenge version of Alterac Valley, which was available in a previous anniversary event, is back. By completing the quest Korrak’s Revenge you will earn the Stormpike Battle Ram (Alliance) or the Frostwolf Snarler (Horde) which were previously unobtainable until now.

Codex of Chromie

Codex of Chromie is a new scenario for the 20th anniversary event. Chromie is hosting tours of the opening of the Ahn’qiraj gate, but things aren’t quite right and she needs players to help fix things. This a queable scenario for 10-20 players.

Tier 2 Transmog

Blizzard have updated the looks of the Tier 2 armor sets from vanilla, and also released some new Tier 2 armor sets for the classes that didn’t exist back then (Death Knight, Monk, Demon Hunter, Evoker).

The new updated looks are not automatically added to your wardrobe, if you have an old Tier 2 set; instead, you have to buy them from vendors for Bronze Celebration Tokens. Each set costs 60 Bronze Celebration Tokens, and your first and second set bought will reduce the cost of future sets (from 60 to 40, then from 40 to 20 tokens). You should be able to get enough currency over the course of the anniversary to obtain all sets.

Blackrock Depths

Blizzard have reworked Blackrock Depths into a 10-15 player raid with eight bosses. It is available in three difficulties: Looking for Raid, Normal and Heroic. Completing the raid on any difficulty rewards you with Bronze Celebration Tokens and Timewarped Relic Coffer Keys.

The loot from the bosses in Blackrock Depths are equal in item level to the loot dropped from bosses in Nerub-ar Palace:

  • Looking for Raid - Veteran Track
  • Normal - Champion Track
  • Heroic - Hero Track

Timewarped Relic Coffer Keys

While killing the Blackrock Depths bosses you will receive 3 Timewarped Relic Coffer Keys matching the difficulty you are in; these keys can be exchanged for specific items from the Timewarped Relic Coffer Key vendors. These items cost 40 Timewarped Relic Coffer Keys each.

However, over the whole anniversary event you can only gather 120 of each Coffer Key, which means you will at maximum be able to purchase 3 items from each difficulty per character.

World Bosses

There are several returning and new world bosses for the anniversary event. Each having unique drops and counting towards your weekly quest progress. They are:

  • Dragons of Nightmare
  • Doomwalker
  • Azuregos
  • Lord Kazzak
  • Sha of Anger
  • Archavon the Stone Watcher

Timewalking Dungeons

There will be several weeks of Timewalking dungeons during the anniversary event, one of which will be the brand new classic timewalking, featuring dungeons like the original Deadmines and the Cataclysm version of Zul’farak.

Experience and Reputation Buffs

The anniversary event is also a great opportunity to level up some characters, it offers a 20% experience and reputation buff, which stacks with other more frequently available buffs such as Warband XP bonuses and Darkmoon Faire, you can get a real boost to how quickly you can level whilst the event is active.

You can read more about this in our guide on How the XP buff works in the WoW 20th Anniversary Event.

Make sure to enjoy the event and get involved with some of the activities on offer, earn some new currency and grab some of the new and returning rewards it has available!
