A Brief History Of Classic WoW

In 2019, Classic WoW was just Classic WoW. You either played modern/retail WoW, or you played Classic; that was it. However, in 2026, Classic WoW can mean so many different things. The original Classic servers, dubbed the “progression” servers, have gone through TBC, WoTLK, Cataclysm, and now are on Mists of Pandaria.

Characters back in 2021 had chances to clone or move their characters to servers that would NOT progress into TBC, and those servers to this day still exist, known as the “Era” servers. The Era servers are as close to “no changes” Vanilla servers as possible, where all original WoW content is still active and available with no plans to progress to The Burning Crusade. During their existence, a movement was created by a community of players to challenge people to give their toons 1 life only. If they die, they must delete their character and go again.

Hardcore Deathlog Addon

What become known as the 'Hardcore' challenge became so popular Blizzard made unique servers just for this! In 2023, Blizzard announced their second seasonal server to follow Season of Mastery: Season of Discovery. These servers still exist, and now, thanks to a community push, these servers are making a comeback thanks to streamers like Jokerd, Guzu, and Savix, creating the “Fake Fresh” movement.

The latest addition to Classic are the 20th Anniversary Servers, now on The Burning Crusade once again. With that totals five different versions of Classic, all with varying degrees of activity. So how does one know which version of Classic is for them?

MoP Classic

Best For: Players open to finding and joining a guild and enjoying the most challenging PvE content in a "classic" setting, while also offering a great and fast catch-up system for new players.

The original progression servers are on the final patch of Mists of Pandaria, with players progressing through Siege of Orgrimmar once again. If you enjoy harder PvE content while still technically in a Classic setting, Mists of Pandaria Classic is for you.

Easy Catchup System

Thanks to a MoP Classic unique system, the Celestial Heroic Dungeons, players can easily get caught up on gear without having to progress through old raids. These dungeons replace the original Looking For Raid feature in MoP, allowing players to get LFR item-level gear simply by doing these unique Heroic Dungeons instead.

Celestial Heroic Dungeons are also a part of the RDF tool, meaning you can let the game find the group for you, versus you manually having to find four others to group up with. Tanks and Healers will have much faster queue times but DPS players, however, may have to wait a bit longer.

Challenging PvE Content

Mists of Pandaria Classic offers the most challenging PvE content in Classic WoW. MoP Classic is currently on it's final raid tier, Siege of Orgrimmar. This raid is very popular in WoW's history, and players can either do this raid in a 25 or 10-player setting. This raid also comes with a Normal and Heroic mode, allowing players to progress at their own pace through the content.

Along with raids, players can enter Challenge Modes, the original version of the now Mythic + system. These challenge dungeons also have unique timers and rewards in MoP Classic compared to original MoP, offering new toys, cosmetics, mounts, and titles!

Siege of Ogrimmar

Era Servers

Best For: Players who want to go back to the 'olden days' of original World of Warcraft with as little changes as possible. Players who enjoy a slow leveling journey, original 40 player raids and slow player power progression, will find much enjoyment here.

The Era servers are servers that were originally created back in 2021 for players who didn't want to progress into The Burning Crusade. For players who just want to play Vanilla WoW as close to how it was back in 2004, these are the servers for you.

No Changes

It can be considered both a pro and a con (depending on your perspective) that these servers are as close to “no changes” as possible. There are no "quality of life" changes added here. Leveling from 1-60 will be a journey and will take some serious time.

Every bit of gold earned will be important to save as you wait until level 40 to get your first mount. At level 60, you'll compete for loot with up to 39 other people in raids, making each piece of gear upgrade feel that much more important.

Era Naxxramas

A Second Chance

Players who have stayed on these servers have created multiple toons, with the goal of getting as close to endgame BiS as possible on their classes. Players who never got Corrupted Ashbringer, Thunderfury (did someone say Thunderfury?), Hand of Ragnaros, etc, now can go back and achieve that since these servers will stay in Vanilla. If you enjoy a slow leveling process, 40 man raiding, slow player power progression, and the potential to get all the things you never got back in 2004-06, this is the server for you!

Hardcore Classic

Best For: Players who love the leveling journey in Vanilla WoW. The Hardcore challenge creates a unique and very intense journey for every character you create, as your character gets 1 life and 1 life only.

Still in a Vanilla setting, these servers are fully devoted to players who want to do the 1-life challenge with everyone else around them also doing the same. The challenge brings a new dimension to levelling and raiding (should you get that far) in original World of Warcraft. If you enjoyed the slower leveling process Vanilla brings, this takes it to another level! Every pull, every move, every decision you make in Azeroth can be your last if you make a wrong move!

Additional Challenges

For the more adventurous, players can even add a “Self Found” or “Solo Self Found” challenge, which restricts them from trading and using the Auction House. This makes features such as professions, quest rewards, and dungeon upgrades even more impactful. Players will scour across Azeroth to find a vendor that sells a unique Leatherworking, Tailoring, or Blacksmithing pattern that allows them to craft a new item for their toon.

Players will be forced to stop focusing on levelling their experience bar, but instead, level their skinning or mining, as they know quest rewards are scarce in their current level bracket. Engineers will use their gadgets, tools, and bombs as much as possible to alleviate their chances of death!

Unique Raiding

If you manage to get to level 60, you can continue your journey in endgame dungeons and raids. Your skills and knowledge are put to the ultimate test as your life is in the hands of 39 other raiders! Because of restrictions in Hardcore (and how frequently players tend to die), your raiders are not nearly as geared as they would be in Era, making raid encounters last much longer. E

very pull cannot be without a plan; every death means one less raider. If you enjoy a challenging, slow, and thoughtful levelling process in the original Azeroth, with thrilling and anxiety-driven endgame raiding content, then Hardcore is your version of classic to play!

Season of Discovery

Best For: Players who yearn for changes in the Vanilla WoW setting. Season of Discovery (SoD) gives players a new view on the 1-60 world of Azeroth, giving players new abilities, changing the meta, and opportunities for unique builds and playstyles!

Originally launching back in 2023, these servers are the most unique version of Classic WoW that Blizzard has ever created. These servers, just like Hardcore and Era, take place in the Vanilla Azeroth, where your max level is still 60. However, unlike Era, the home of “no changes”, Season of Discovery is “all the changes!”.

Runes and New Metas

SoD has a unique feature through Runes, which players can attach these to their gear, gaining new abilities that either exist only in future versions of WoW, or are completely unique to SoD. Runes allow for classes and specs that would normally be shunned from Vanilla raids, such as Retribution Paladin, Balance Druid, Shadow Priest, and Protection Paladin, to now shine!

Raid compositions are much more diverse and allow for larger, more dynamic ensembles compared to Era. Rotations, class depth, and stats are more complex for each class and spec, allowing for more thoughtful gameplay. Players can opt into strong synergistic builds, or just run very wacky builds and just see what they can do!

Sod Fake Fresh

A Recent Rise in Popularity

Currently, there is a big “Fake Fresh” movement on these servers; originally starting on the EU servers, it has spread to NA as well. Players can join guilds that are doing 2-week progression locks, or join guilds where players can get to 60 and do all endgame content as they please.

The endgame raids also have unique mechanics, abilities, and affixes compared to their original versions that you'd find in Era, and there are new endgame dungeons and raids with the Karazhan Crypts and Scarlet Enclave instances, both of which were incredibly popular on release! If you want to play the most experimental version of Classic World of Warcraft in the 1-60 setting of World of Warcraft, Season of Discovery is for you!

TBC Anniversary

Best For: Players who loved The Burning Crusade or never got to play it either in 2006 or 2021. This version comes with some quality of life adjustments and the game overall is great for those who want more variety and class updates from Vanilla, but not as much as Wrath of the Lich King and later expansions gave.

The final WoW Classic 'branch' to discuss is the most recent: the 20th Anniversary Edition servers. These were launched in November 2024, starting back in Vanilla WoW, with the premise that phase cadences would be much faster than normal.

Quality of Life Changes and High Population

Some overall positive quality of life changes were given, such as dual specialization, instant mail between characters on the same account, guild banks, increased honor gains in battlegrounds, and the controversial level 58 boost when they progressed into TBC’s pre-patch.

Players who may have missed out on TBC in 2006 and 2021 can get a third opportunity to play these servers. These are currently the most active and populated servers among the five classic servers, and the graph below shows the insane surge in players when Anniversary transitioned from Vanilla to TBC earlier this year.

A Fan Favorite Expansion

The Burning Crusade is a fan-favorite expansion and has a very unique flavor to it. It’s not Vanilla, where everything is more bare-bones, but it’s not as “fixed” as it gets in the following expansion: Wrath of the Lich King. To the die-hard TBC fans, it is in that sweet spot between the two.

In TBC, there are still “flaws” that players have learned to love. Protection Paladins still lack a single-target taunt; Retribution Paladins' rotation is built around the unintended exploit of “Seal Twisting”; bosses are mostly immune to taunt, making threat one of the biggest mechanics of this version of WoW. But with these flaws come additions that make it potentially more enjoyable than the Era servers.

The Burning Crusade

All classes and specs get a revamp that makes them way more viable, and some optimal, which were not in Vanilla WoW. TBC has a big emphasis on class identity through unique party buffs, raid buffs, and target debuffs that only some classes and specs provide. Raid sizes are reduced to 25 and 10, making it much easier to fill a raid, and content is slightly more challenging, allowing for more interesting gameplay in said raids.

If you want a slightly “more developed” version of Vanilla WoW with the most active player base, and a game focused around the uniqueness of your class and spec, then TBC is for you!

Although it may be confusing, there is more than likely a version of Classic World of Warcraft for you! If modern/retail just isn't your taste, try out one of the five versions of Classic!
