Raid Setup
Introduction
Welcome to our Gurtogg Bloodboil guide, the sixth boss of the Black Temple raid in The Burning Crusade Phase 3.This guide covers the fight mechanics and the strategy we recommend to defeat this boss!
Gurtogg Bloodboil is a mutated fel orc, or a dire-orc, corrupted by the fel and used as a weapon from the fel orcs of the Dragonmaw and Hellfire to crush enemies and corrupt them with his powerful Bloodboil spell.
This fight has Void Reaver-like tank swaps paired with a strong emphasis on your healers and their ability to keep players alive through ramping ticking damage, fixate mechanics, and aoe frontals.
Fight Style: intense healing fight with tank swaps and fixates
Recommended Setup: 2-3x Tank /5-6x Healer / 17-18x DPS
Required utilities: Healthstones, Personal Damage Reductions, and Blessing Of Protection
Hero/Lust usage: Phase 1 or 2
Method Boss Review
This fight provides a fun and focused challenge for healers to keep up tanks in Phase 1 while also requiring healing for raid members hit by a very powerful frontal. In Phase 2, healers must do everything they can to keep the fixate target alive, or else it’ll more than likely lead to a wipe.
Tanks must focus on surviving and allowing threat swaps as their stacking debuff gets to high, allowing for more interactive and immersive gameplay.

Easy Mode
This is a repeating 2 phase fight with Phase 1 being a Void Reaver-like tank swap that can only be done through organic threat chasing, as the boss is taunt immune, along with intense healing from a stacking tank debuff: Acidic Wound. Ranged members must alternate who gets a stacking DoT debuff from Gurtogg: Bloodboil. Phase 2 is a 30 second fixate where healers must keep alive the target picked by Fel Rage or Gurtogg will decimate everyone in the raid, leading to a wipe.
Phase 1: Bloodboil
- Alternate tanks every 10-20 stacks of Acidic Wound
- 3 groups of 5 ranged players must alternate taking Bloodboil stacks every 10 seconds by being the farthest from the boss.
- Heal players hit by Fel-Acid Breath
Phase 2: Fel Rage
- Heal the player targeted by Fel Rage
- Avoid the front of the boss for his Arcing Smash
- Heal players hit by Fel-Acid Breath
Mechanics
Bloodboil
Deals 600 damage every second for 24 seconds to the 5 furthest players from Gurtogg. Stacks every 10 seconds.
Acidic Wound
Inflicts 300 Nature damage to an enemy every 3 seconds and reduces its armor by 500. Stacks up to 60 times; lasts 1 min.
Fel-Acid Breath
Inflicts 2,850 to 3,150 Nature damage and an additional 2,750 damage every 1 sec. to enemies in a cone in front of the caster. Lasts 5 seconds.
Arcing Smash
Lashes out in a vicious arc, inflicting normal damage plus 125 to enemies in a cone in front of the caster.
Bewildering Strike
A powerful blow that deals damage and confuses the target for 8 sec. Not on any timer but has a 2 second cooldown.
Fel Rage
Fel Power courses through your veins, increasing health by 30,000, Armor by 15,000, healing received by 100%, but all damage taken by 300%.
Fel Rage (Gurtogg)
Gurtogg Bloodboil increases size by 65%, damage by 85%, and gains a stacking buff, Fury, increasing haste by 8%. Lasts 30 seconds.
Insignificance
Your actions do not generate threat. Threat generation decreased by 100%.
Fel Arcing Smash
Lashes out in a vicious arc, inflicting normal damage plus 125 to enemies in a cone in front of the caster. Also reduces healing effects by 50%.
Fel-Acid Breath
Inflicts 2,850 to 3,150 Nature damage and an additional 2,750 damage every 5 sec. to enemies in a cone in front of the caster. Lasts 20 seconds.
Strategy
Position your ranged players in 3 groups of 5 away from the boss, and rotate who is the farthest group to take a stack of Bloodboil. Tanks need to be rotating threat as best they can to not take too many stacks of Acidic Wound. Hunters Misdirections can help greatly. Paladins can Divine Shield themselves to drop stacks and drop threat, and can also cast Blessing Of Protection on other tanks to drop their threat (BoP does not drop Acidic Wound stacks however).
Five Seconds after the 5th Bloodboil out, 55 seconds into the encounter, Phase 2 starts. Gurtogg picks a random target to apply Fel Rage to, and that player must survive for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, threat is wiped and Phase 1 begins again.
Phase 1: Bloodboil
Have ranged pre-positioned in their 3 groups as the pull starts. 2-3 tanks will maintain threat throughout this fight and need to communicate when the other needs to take over. You can use the Eject mechanic to drop threat, but its not on any consistent timer so relying on it isn’t safe. Melee need to spread around the boss to avoid as many people getting hit by Fel-Acid Breath as possible. After the 5th Bloodboil, Phase 2 starts.
Three things to get right here:
- Tanks rotate threat to spread out Acidic Wound stacks.
- Ranged rotate Bloodboil stacks every stack.
- Melee: spread out to mitigate Fel-Acid Breath.

Acidic Wound
Tanks need to fight for threat and call when one tank needs to take over another. Outside of Blessing Of Protection, Divine Shield, and Eject, the main tank must slow or stop damage to allow the 2nd tank to take over. Hunters Misdirects can help push tanks over another.
Blood Boil
This damage is not bad if you divide the stacks up evenly. Simply have 3 groups of 5 ranged to alternate getting stacks. By the end, two groups will have 2 stacks, taking 1200 damage every 3 seconds, and one group will only have 1 stack.
Fel Acid Breath
Melee need to spread out to mitigate who gets hit by this. Do not stack on top of off-tanks, as we would prefer them to to get this debuff along with eventually getting Acidic Wound stacks.
Phase 2: Fel Rage
Gurtogg picks a target for Fel Rage, and the entire focus is keeping that target alive, or else you’ll more than likely wipe here. This phase lasts the entirety of the Fel Rage debuff: 30 seconds. Afterwards, it resets to Phase 1 again.
Three things to get right here:
- Targets hit by Fel Rage need to do everything they can to survive
- Remember to still have 1 healer on the tanks who have high Acidic Wound stacks from Phase 1
- Do not stand directly in front of the boss to avoid Arcing Smash

Fel Rage
Targets hit by Fel Rage should do anything they can to stay alive. You can BoP the Fel Rage target to ignore the mechanic for 8 seconds. If it’s on a caster or healer, you should especially do so. However, DO NOT use immunities or combat droppers like Feign Death or Iceblock, as it will drop threat and cause a wipe for the raid.
Insignificance
Players not hit by Fel Rage will gain an Insignificance debuff, reducing threat by 100% for 30 seconds.
The Rest
Fel Acid Breath and Arcing Smash carry over from Phase 1, except now Arcing Smash will reduce healing by 50% on the target.
