Raid Setup

Introduction

Welcome to our High Warlord Naj’entus guide, the first boss of the Black Temple raid in The Burning Crusade Phase 3. This guide covers the fight mechanics and the strategy we recommend to defeat this boss!

Naj’entus is Vashj’s Naga ambassador that guards the sewers of the Black Temple, and they aren’t too happy about what you and your friends did to her back in Serpentshrine Cavern. This fight will focus on whether or not you can survive intense raid wide burst damage.

This fight is a healer check, as there’s very little mechanics for DPS and tanks to have to do, and all the focus are if your healers can keep everyone alive. Survive the 8,500 instant frost damage every minute, and you’ll make your way through the Black Temple sewers.

Fight Style: Single Target with consistent and burst raid damage

Recommended Setup: 1x Tank /5-6x Healer / 18-19x DPS

Required utilities: Healthstones and Personal Damage Reductions

Hero/Lust usage: Phase 1 or After Tidal Burst

Method Boss Review

For a first boss, this fight can be a little intense healing wise, especially if people are not spread out to avoid Needle Spine damage. Outside of that, mechanics are very simple and the two main ones, Impaling Spine and Tidal Shield are on strict timers, allowing easy planning.

This fight focuses on every player being able to also click on the Naj’entus Spine on command when their raid leader asks for it, so one person who doesn’t know what’s happening can mess it up for everyone, which isn’t particularly fun.

Outside of that, it’s a healer check to make sure healers can keep everyone up throughout Tidal Burst. So healers who usually have a boring time in TBC raids will have some more fun and have to actually be attentive on this encounter.

Easy Mode

The main mechanic: Survive Tidal Burst. You’ll need to understand how to break Tidal Shield and survive this mechanic.

Phase 1:

  • Tank the boss by his platform, facing away from the raid. Everyone spreads out 6 yards for Needle Spine to negate it’s potential splash damage.
  • Heal players hit with Impaling Spine every 20 seconds.
  • Click the Impaling Spine on the player to free them, and loot the spine.
  • Tidal Shield occurs every minute, making the boss full immune and healing.
  • Players with Naj'entus Spine need to click it to break the Shield, causing Tidal Burst to happen, dealing 8500 raid wide Frost damage.
  • Heal the raid and rinse and repeat mechanics.

Mechanics

Impaling Spine Mechanic Icon

Impaling Spine

Naj’entus impales a random player, dealing 5,000 damage and ticking 2,800 damage on the player until another player removes the spine from that player. Casts every 20 seconds. The spine, Naj'entus Spine, is now in the bags of the player who removed it.

Tidal Shield Mechanic Icon

Tidal Shield

Every minute, Najentus casts a shield on himself, healing until the shield is popped. When it's popped, it triggers Tidal Burst. Heal the raid to full before breaking the shield with the Naj'entus Spine

Tidal Burst Mechanic Icon

Tidal Burst

Deals 8,500 raid wide Frost damage. This can only be mitigated by the following: Divine Shield, Ice Block, Frost Ward, Frost Protection Potion, or Power Word Shield. Healers need to heal the raid as soon as this goes out and everyone should use a Healthstone immediately after.

Needle Spine Mechanic Icon

Needle Spine

Najentus picks random targets dealing 2,890-3,910 damage, and an additional 2,280 to 2,520 damage to anyone within 6 yards. All ranged and healers need to be at least 6 yards apart from each other, with melee in at least 3 groups to mitigate players getting hit from the additional splash damage.

Horseshoe Swipe Mechanic Icon

Horseshoe Swipe

Inflicts weapon damage plus 1 to an enemy and its nearest ally. Have no one but the tank be in front of the boss.

Strategy

Pre-position your raid to all be 6 yards apart from each other to negate splash damage from Needle Spine. Melee can be in 3 separate groups to help with this as well. After positions are set, the main tank can pull the boss, dragging him slightly down from his position and then facing him away from the raid. Hunters use your Misdirects on the tank at the start to establish great snap threat.

Three things to get right here:

  • Avoid unnecessary splash damage from Needle Spine. There’s no reason to take additional splash damage.
  • Healers should be spread evenly and only divert heals off the tank if raid damage goes out near them.
  • When a player is hit with Impaling Spine, players nearby should be able to click it ASAP.

Impaling Spine

Every 20 seconds, Naj’entus will pick a target for Impaling Spine. Boss Mod addons will mark the player hit with Skull, making it very easy for all players to see. Players nearby should free the player by clicking the spine, looting the item “Naj'entus Spine” in their bags. Players hit by the spine should be healed by 1-2 healers near them with the rest still on the main tank.

Tidal Shield and Tidal Burst

Every minute Naj'entus will place a Tidal Shield on him, making him immune to all damage and healing while the shield is up. The shield can only be broken when players click on the Naj'entus Spine, which were any of the two players who freed those from Impaling Spine.

Rinse and Repeat!

Outside of that, just spread out for Needle Spine damage, and that's the encounter. The main two mechanics are on hard timers, so it's easy to predict when that damage will go off. Although Impaling Spine is on a 20-second timer, it will not go off at minute marks like 60 seconds and 120 seconds, along with Tidal Shield. So you will only see two of them before each shield.
