How To Get A Mount In WoW Forever: Cost, Requirement & Mount Options

World of Warcraft Forever is about the journey, and oh boy does some of that journey take a while, especially if you need to run. You will be out and about in the world much more than in modern World of Warcraft, and acquiring a trusty companion to take you to places is a major milestone in your progress.

Your first mount in World of Warcraft Forever is available at level 40. For most classes, it is not cheap, and you need to save gold to be able to acquire it. While there are real-money mounts available, the cost is in the riding skill itself, which you still need to buy even for a store mount.

The level 40 mount increases your movement speed by 60%. You can later acquire an Epic mount at level 60 that increases your movement speed by 100%, but that one is so expensive that fresh level 60 characters often cannot buy one. The level 40 mount, on the other hand, is something that you can afford if you save for it while leveling.

Riding Skill Cost, Mount Cost, and Discounts

Apprentice Riding at level 40 costs 100 gold. You purchase your Riding skill from the Riding Instructor of your own race. This price includes your first mount, which is always one of the color options of the basic mount of your race. You can buy additional color options for 20 gold each.

Got Your Eye On A Different Mount? You cannot ride the mounts of other races until you reach Exalted reputation with them.

Journeyman Riding at level 60 costs a whopping 1,000 gold, and the Epic Swift mounts cost 200 gold each.

There are some ways to discount the cost of riding and mounts, although your options are limited:

Honored reputation with your home faction gives you a 10% discount on both the Riding skill and the mounts of your race.
Bartering Legacy talent can give you an up to 10% discount on mounts, but not on Riding skill.
The two discounts stack for a potential 20% off from mount prices, but this only helps with cosmetic options because it does not affect the riding skill price.

Free Mounts for Paladin and Warlock

Paladin and Warlock are major exceptions to the usual order of things.

Alliance Paladins get a simple quest, The Tome Of Nobility, either as a breadcrumb from The Mystic Ward in Ironforge or directly from The Cathedral of Light in Stormwind, and the quest simply gives them their mount, for free.

Horde Paladins have a similar quest, although it has not been possible to test it in the beta yet.

Warlocks of both factions get their free mount from Strahad Farsan in Ratchet. It is also a quest at level 40, just like with Paladin.

Paladin and Warlock also have epic questlines at level 60 to get an Epic mount, but those questlines are difficult and require reagents that cost hundreds of gold. It can still be a cheaper alternative to regular riding training.

Store Mounts in WoW Forever

You might be wondering, are there store mounts in WoW Forever? The answer is yes. At launch, there are two real-money mounts available in WoW Forever.

WoW Forever store mounts at launch

Veteran Adventurer’s Loyal Companion: Available in only in the more expensive Skyborne Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection.

Cerulean Prideclaw: Available in Skyborne Heroic Pack, Skyborne Epic Pack, and Warcraft Forever Collection. The beta datamines show this as a level 60 mount, so we do not know if it can be used at level 40 until the game launches.

Beware: even if you buy a store mount, you still need to pay for the Riding Skill to be able to use them!

Where To Buy Your Riding Skill and First Mount

Each race has their own vendors, and you need to journey back to your homeland for your first mount, because the vendors of other races refuse to sell to you unless you have Exalted reputation with them.

Humans

Humans are somewhat special, because they have their Riding Instructor Randal Hunter and main horse vendor Katie Hunter in the Eastvale Logging Camp in Elwynn Forest, but you can also buy a Black Stallion at level 40, but only from Unger Statforth in Menethil Harbor in Wetlands. Menethil Harbor does not have a Riding Instructor, so you still need to visit Elwynn Forest too regardless.

Dwarves

Dwarves ride Rams, and you can buy the Riding skill from Ultham Ironhorn and your first Ram from Veron Amberstill in Amberstill Ranch in Dun Morogh.
