Horrific Visions of Stormwind (Revisited) Strategy Guide

Written by Roguery - 21st May 2025

Horrific Visions are being revisited in Patch 11.1.5 of The War Within (TWW), with a few changes from the original versions released in Battle for Azeroth. In this guide we have broken down the best way to tackle the Horrific Vision of Orgrimmar.

We have not covered the Hourglass in this guide, however, if you do want some advice on how to best fill out the Hourglass you can check out our Hourglass of Horrific Visions Overview Guide.

We have broken down each area of the Stormwind Horrific Vision (Revisited), and have highlighted anything that you may want to take advantage of in each area. The order that we recommend you progress through Stormwind is shown in the image below.

Cathedral District

At the start of the Horrific Vision of Stormwind you will spawn on the west side of the cathedral. The base Sanity Drain in the area is 6 Sanity per second. There are a few objectives we recommend taking into consideration before you move on.

In the image below we have shown everything that is notable in the area.

First we recommend checking to see if either Augustus Molaine or Angry Bear Rug Spirit is active; only one of these will be active at a time.

The next notable NPC is Morgan Pestel. He will be a corpse on the floor, next to him will be a potion. Whichever colour potion is next to him will reduce your sanity by 100, so avoid all potions of this colour during that run of the Horrific Vision. This means you can drink all other colour potions you can find around the vision.

Odd Crystals

The last notable NPC is Zarhaal, he will trade odd crystals that can be found around the Horrific Vision for Displaced Corrupted Mementos.

The table below shows the amount of mementos you will receive for the crystals you hand in. The key thing to note is the more you collect and hand-in in a single go, the more mementos you are rewarded with; so it is better to collect as many as you can before turning them in, rather than only turning a few in at a time, whilst also not failing to turn them in before the vision ends (by defeating Alleria or losing all of your sanity).

Crystals Displaced Corrupted Mementos
1 20
2 45
3 75
4 110
5 150

The map below shows the location of all the odd crystal locations in the Horrific Visions of Stormwind.

Mage Quarter

The Mage Quarter is the first lost area we recommend you visit. In this zone you will lose 10 sanity per second without any unlocks on the Hourglass of Horrific Visions.

The first objective in this area is to close 5 portals, and to do this you simply need to defeat the enemies guarding the portal and the portal will close on its own. In the image below we have outlined the route we recommend taking to clear all 5 portals.

When you get to the portal to the West, you will find it guarded by Zardeth the Black Claw. Zardeth has the following abilities:

  • Shadow Bolt - Deals Shadow Damage to the target. Can be Interrupted.
  • Rain of Fire - Summons fire in a circle deals fire damage and drains 30 sanity every 2 seconds for 12 seconds to players who remain in the circle.
  • Summon Unstable Servant - Zardeth Summons Unstable Servants periodically. Unstable Servants channel and deal damage based on max Health, you should AoE them down as quickly as possible.

Once you have defeated Zardeth, head into the middle of the Mage Quarters, there are 2 portals here. Try to clear both of these before engaging the patrolling Boundless Corruption. Then engage the boundless Corruption, this can be a very scary encounter especially for melee, it has the following abilities:

  • Chaos breath - A frontal cone that deals heavy damage and drains 30 sanity every second for 4 seconds.
  • Expel Corruption - The Boundless Corruption continuously spawns circles on the ground which deal moderate damage and reduce sanity.

There will be one more portal directly north through the building that you need to clear. Once you have done that, you can enter the Mage Tower in the center to fight Magister Umbric, the final objective of this area. Magister Umbric is a difficult encounter that requires good positioning, he has the following abilities:

  • Frozen Storm - At 80%, 45% and 25% health, Umbric teleports to one end of the room and channels Frozen Storm. While Channeling, he fires frostbolts down the room, being hit by this frostbolt deals moderate damage and drains 30 sanity. You can’t hit Umbric until you get within 6 yards of him.
  • Entropic Missiles - Channel onto a target, dealing damage and draining 15 sanity every second for three seconds. This is Interruptible.
  • Tainted Polymorph - Transforms the target into a sheep for 4 seconds, causing them to wander and be unable to attack or cast spells.

Once you have defeated Umbric, a portal spawns just outside the room that takes you back to the Cathedral District.

Trade District

The Trade District is a corrupted area located in the south of the Horrific Vision of Stormwind, in this area you will lose 8 Sanity per second without any upgrades to Hourglass of Horrific Visions.

The first objectives in this area will be to defeat two mini bosses then free 8 captives. We recommend entering the zone from the north most entrance, and following the path down to the right. To free the captives you click on the cages that the NPCs are trapped in, after a short cast they will be free, any damage taken interrupts the cast so make sure you defeat all the enemies before trying to free them.

As you head towards the bank, if it is open you can enter to find a Neglected Guild Bank interacting with this grant 10% Critical Strike Chance.

Following the route we suggest you will face Inquisitor Darkspeak near the flightmasters, he has a few abilities you want to be aware of:

  • Agonizing Torment - Channels on to a single player, dealing heavy shadow damage and causing 10 sanity drain every 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds. This can be interrupted.
  • Convert - Turns a friendly player into an enemy until Darkspeak is defeated. Does not use this when solo.

before you can free the captives Slavemaster Ul’rok will need to be defeated near the center of the Trade District. Slavemaster UI’rok is the final objective of the Trade District and has several abilities:

  • Chains of Servitude - at 80% and 30% health, Slavemaster Ul’rok silences all players and pulls them towards him. If players get to close he deals heavy damage, stuns them for 5 seconds and drains 200 sanity.
  • Summon Tentacle - During the fight Ul’rok summons tentacles that slam the ground, this is indicated by a purple swirl.

Once all the captives are freed, exit the Trade District towards Old Town.

Old Town

Old Town is the other Lost Area dealing 12 Sanity damage per second without any upgrades to the Horrific Hourglass.

When you enter Old Town you will meet up with Valeera, you will need to collect 2 keys from the mini bosses in this area. Following our route the first mini boss you will encounter is Armsmaster Terenson. She has a few abilities that can easily destroy your sanity bar if you make mistakes, they are:

  • Blade Flourish - After a short cast Terenson hits all nearby targets inflicting physical damage and draining 30 sanity every second for four seconds.
  • Roaring Blast - Frontal Cone that targets players, deals massive fire damage and deals 120 Sanity damage.

After defeating Terenson you will automatically receive the key without needing to loot. You can continue round and head towards where the training dummies usually are in Stormwind. Just outside you will find Alx’kov the Infested. He has a few abilities some of which can easily deplete your sanity:

  • Corrupted Blight - Inflicts a dispellable disease on a player inflicting shadow damage over time. This spreads to other nearby players.
  • Lurking Appendages - Shadowy tendrils spawn near Alx’kov, these silence, deal damage and drain 30 sanity per second to players that remain in the area.

Once you have defeated Alx’kov you will need to use keys just a little north, if you are solo you can just click on one and Valeera will do the other. If you are here with a group then make sure to time it to activate at the same time.

Once inside you can take on Mathias Shaw, he is usually stealthed on the hill near the main building. He has a few abilities we have detailed below:

  • Eye of Chaos - Shaw spans an Eye of Chaos which moves near the player. The eyes channel Dark Gaze on players which deals shadow damage and drains 20 sanity every 2 seconds while you look at them. Over time he will spawn more Eyes of Chaos.
  • Vanish - Occasionally Shaw will Vanish and appear behind a player dealing shadow damage and spawning swirls on the floor, being caught in this causes damage and drains sanity.

After defeating Shaw a portal spawn teleporting you to the Cathedral district.

Dwarven District

The Dwarven District is the last zone we recommend taking on. This zone drains 8 sanity per second with no upgrades to the Horrific Hourglass.

horrific vision of stormwind dwarven district

Before entering the Dwarven District you will need to defeat three Brainwashed Gnomes to save Kelsey Steelspark. Once you rescue Kelsey you can enter the Dwarven District, here you will need to place 8 bombs around the area we have shown our preferred path on the map above.

In the center of the Dwarven District you will find Forge-Guard Hurrul, while he is avoidable and not required, he is positioned near a bomb making it hard to avoid him. If you do engage him he has the following abilities:

  • Void-Tainted Blades - Deals Shadow Damage and slows the target's movement speed by 20% for 18 seconds.
  • Entropic Leap - Harrul leaps at a player, inflicts heavy shadow damage and drains 30 sanity.

After you have set off all 8 bombs Therum Deepforge will spawn near the south of the zone, he is the boss of this area and will use the following abilities:

  • Explosive Ordnance - Therum throws barrels of explosives at random players that detonate after 5 seconds. Staying inside the explosion deals massive fire damage and drains 90 sanity. These also leave behind a pool of fire that deal fire damage over time and drain 30 sanity per second.
  • Empowered Forge Breath - Inflicts fire damage in a frontal cone also draining 25 sanity every second for three seconds.

Once you have defeated Therum a portal will spawn taking you back to the Cathedral District.

Alleria Windrunner

Alleria is the final boss of the Horrific Vision of Stormwind, she gains 10% increased health and additional abilities for each area you have completed. We have broken down all of her abilities including the one she gains for defeated areas.

  • Darkened Sky - Alleria shoots into the air raining void onto the ground players caught in the areas take shadow damage.
  • Void Eruption - Alleria begins to cast Void Eruption after the cast completes she deals massive shadow damage and drains 240 sanity from all players still in line of sight. You can use the pillars to avoid this ability
  • Tainted Polymorph - Only usable if Magister Umbric was defeated. Transforms the target into a sheep for 4 seconds, causing them to wander and be unable to attack or cast spells. This can and should be interrupted.
  • Explosive Ordnance - Only usable if TherumDeepforge was defeated. Alleria throws barrels of explosives at random players that detonate after 5 seconds. Staying inside the explosion deals massive fire damage and drains 90 sanity. These also leave behind a pool of fire that deal fire damage over time and drain 30 sanity per second.
  • Chains of Servitude - Only usable if Slavemaster Ul'rok was defeated. At 66% and 34% health, Alleria silences all players and pulls them towards her. If players get to close he deals heavy damage, stuns them for 5 seconds and drains 200 sanity.
  • Eye of Chaos - Only usable if Mathias Shaw was defeated. Alleria is accompanied by an Eye of Chaos, The eyes channel Dark Gaze on players which deals shadow damage and drains 20 sanity every 2 seconds while you look at them.
