The Stone Guard Raid Guide for Mogu’shan Vaults MoP Classic
You will face 4 Guardians but in a 10 man environment, a different one of them will be disabled each week. The Guardians all have unique abilities as well as a pool of shared abilities.
This is a typical placement for this fight.
Every Guardian uses Rend Flesh on the tank. This deals a moderate amount of damage and will be ignored during most of the fight. They also all have Solid Stone, a passive making them quasi-immune when isolated from the other dogs but stopping any energy gain. This, with Petrifications and Overloads, is the biggest part of the fight.
When a Guardian casts Petrification, it puts a stacking debuff on the raid, and you take 90% less damage from every ability coming from that Guardian. However, if it reaches 100 stacks, it's game over.
During the fight, the Guardians keep getting energy (when they stand next to another Guardian). Once they reach 100% energy, they Overload, dealing a huge chunk of damage to the raid (and Killing the raid in HM). To avoid dying from this, you need to manipulate when the Guardian overloads. Overload also clears Petrification stacks.
This is the key part of the fight: you want the Guardian using Petrification to be the one overloading. To do so, in 10 man, tank one Guardian on their own. This Guardian will gain 0 energy.
The other tank will have to take both remaining Guardians. Both will gain Energy. When a Guardian casts Petrification, it needs to be one of the Guardians tanked with another one, to make sure it gains energy, and be the one with the most energy. Make sure that Guardians not petrifying the raid stay at 70% energy or lower by swapping them around and isolating the one with the highest energy if it’s not the one you want to Overload.
Guardians also have their own unique abilities:
- Amethyst: Amethyst Pool. Don’t stand in them.
- Cobalt: Cobalt Mine. Don’t stand in them. If you want to clear the room, wait for Cobalt Petrification and run into them.
- Jade: Jade Shards. Heal the damage.
- Jasper: Jasper Chains. Stay close to the person you are chained with.
The Stone Guard 25 Man & Heroic Raid Guide MoP Classic
In 25 Man, there are always 4 Guardians. You need a third tank to tank the forth guardian on its own, the strategy doesn’t change, communication is just a bit harder.
In Heroic Mode, abilities deal way more damage so you have to be more precise in your execution. On pull, each Guardian leaves behind them a Crystal. You can click it to gain a buff. While buffed, you take more damage and running on the tiles on each side of the room marks them. For every tile marked, you gain 1% Damage and 1% Spirit.
Highly mobile ranged classes need to click the Crystal, get some healer attention and run through the room to color as many tiles as possible, powering your raid. At 70% and 40%, repeat the process.
Nothing else changes.
