Phantom Blade Zero is nearly here, and honestly, it's been a long wait. S-Game first dropped details at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, and that trailer instantly caused a buzz among fans of the genre. After delays, the game is finally here. It had a second big reveal in 2025, which ramped up the hype even more.

You play Soul, an elite assassin who's been framed for murder and handed a death sentence with a countdown attached. It runs on Unreal Engine 5 and lands on 29th October 2026. Here's everything we know so far.

Phantom Blade Zero Release Date

Phantom Blade Zero releases on 29th October 2026 on PS5 and PC, via Steam and the Epic Games Store. In the US, it actually unlocks the evening before, at 7pm PT / 10pm ET on 28th October. For Europe, that's 2am GMT / 3am CET on the 29th, so you might want to wait till you wake up for this one.

It was originally meant to come out on 9th September, a date S-Game revealed at The Game Awards 2025. Then in June, the studio pushed it back by about 50 days. Founder Soulframe Liang said the extra time was for polish at launch. It does bring the game closer to the dreaded GTA 6 release; however, it should have enough time to breathe.

Interestingly, this is a PS5 console exclusive, with a roughly 12-month window, according to rumours. So Xbox and the Switch 2 will have some time to wait for this one.

Is There Any Early Access For Phantom Blade Zero?

There is no early access period for Phantom Blade Zero, regardless of which edition of the game you purchase.

Phantom Blade Zero Pre-Order and Editions

Pre-orders opened on 11th August (12th for most of us outside the US) on the PlayStation Store, Steam, and Epic. There are two editions, both digital.

Note: There is no physical or collector's edition. China did get a collector's edition; however, it never made it outside the region.

Edition Price What you get
Standard $59.99 Base game
Digital Deluxe $69.99 Base game, Wulin Legend outfit, Blood-Steel Form outfit, digital artbook, digital soundtrack

Pre-order either edition and you get the Legacy outfit and the Treasure Basin accessory early. Treasure Basin bumps your Remnant Dust drop rate by 10%, which is a nice little head start on upgrades.

Every pre-order bonus and Deluxe outfit can also be unlocked through normal play. So Deluxe is really about getting the drip early, plus the artbook and soundtrack. Nothing gameplay-wise is locked behind it, and at $60 the Standard Edition is already cheaper than most big releases. If you pre-purchase on Epic, you also get a Soul outfit in Fortnite thrown in.

Sadly, for those who like a disc, this is the latest game to fall into the new PlayStation no-physical-disc situation.

Phantom Blade Zero Story and Setting

Soul is one of the top assassins in The Order, a secretive organisation that pulls the strings from the shadows. Then The Order's patriarch turns up dead, and Soul gets the blame. His own people come hunting, and in a duel with Zuo Shang, his childhood blood brother, Soul takes a blade straight through the heart.

A mysterious healer called the Flesh Sculptor gives him a new, tainted heart, but it only buys him 66 days. There's a cure out there somewhere, so that's your job: find it, track down Zuo Shang, and work out who stitched you up before the clock hits zero.

A New Meta? Interestingly, this is another major title where a time mechanic takes centre stage, as we saw with Blood of Dawnwalker.

It all plays out in the Phantom World, a dark take on roughly Ming dynasty China. More specifically, you're in the Wulin, the martial underworld of wuxia stories, full of fighters, outlaws, and folk living outside the emperor's law.

S-Game calls the style kungfupunk, which is traditional kung fu mashed up with steampunk machinery and body modification, with plenty of horror on top. Think bandit-run valleys, a warehouse full of dangling puppets, and a lake you cross by speedboat.

Then there's the family drama. A masked swordsman protecting a baby popped up in June's State of Play, and August's pre-order trailer unmasked him as Mó Yuan, Soul's dad. He's played by Donnie Yen, who's been S-Game's Creative Consultant on the kung fu since 2023 and also did the facial and motion capture for the role. The trailer frames Mó Yuan as one of the big antagonists, so Soul's father is very much a problem.

Similar again to Blood of Dawnwalker, your choices will matter here. Side quests might open up story paths, with the developers saying Soul's fate can be reshaped and impact the game's many endings (some sources claim there are eight).

Phantom Blade Zero Gameplay

First things first, S-Game has been very clear that this isn't a Soulslike. It's quicker than that, with combos and flashy movement closer to Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry. But it's still tough, and parrying is massive.

The key resource is Sha-Chi. Dodges and special moves burn through it, and enemies have their own. Make a foe block enough, and they'll run dry, which opens them up for a finisher. Perfect-parry their big unblockable attacks, and you get a counter window. It's the kind of system that clicks fast and then takes ages to master.

Your kit is huge. There are over 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, and some of those Edges come straight from enemies you beat.

  • Upgrade weapons to unlock new forms and techniques
  • Pair weapons with accessories for your build
  • Go ranged or bring in summons to help out
  • Reforge a weapon to get your materials back and spend them elsewhere

On top of that, there's a skill tree, and fighting styles like the Drunken Sword, which has Soul stumbling about, dodging everything, and building up drunken energy as he goes.

Bosses have two phases, and if you die in the second one, you restart from that phase. Small mercy, but a big one.

The game will feature four named difficulty modes at release.

  • Wayfarer: for anyone who just wants the story.
  • Pathbreaker: The game's default setting.
  • Hellwalker: smarter, more adaptive enemies.
  • Sixty-Six Days: The hardest of the lot. Every death costs Soul a day. Hit zero, and your save is gone. This mode unlocks after you complete the game on any easier difficulty.

How Long Is Phantom Blade Zero?

It's expected that the game will last around 20-30 hours though some much earlier reports put it at 30-40 hours. so expect something in the region of 30 hours. New Game Plus will unlock once you finish the game.

Phantom Blade Zero World: Is It Open World?

This isn't an open world, and It’s not a Soulslike, but the level design borrows from them. It's semi-open, with eight connected regions packed with hidden paths, shortcuts, rare loot, and optional bosses. If you liked how FromSoftware maps loop back on themselves, you'll feel right at home. You'll also bump into plenty of folk who need help along the way.

Some of those side quests feed back into the main story and open new paths, so it's worth talking to people rather than sprinting from boss to boss.
