Phantom Blade Zero: How to Get the Mandate Encampment Gate Key & Beat Wan Jun

In Phantom Blade Zero, the Mandate Encampment is an area found within the Village Of Lu. It has additional bosses, quests, and loot to be found - but first you must find the key to open the gate and enter. This can't be done until you reach Pangzhen, but knowing where to go will make it as easy as possible.

Mandate Encampment Location

The Mandate Encampment can be found in the Village Of Lu, marked on the exact map screenshot below.

However, you won't be able to enter at first, as there is a key required to open the door.

Once you reach the Mandate Encampment for the first time, you can activate the bell outside the entrance to make it easy to fast travel back to it later on - this will come in handy once you finally have the key.

How to Find the Mandate Encampment Key

To find the Mandate Encampment Key, you will need to progress through the main story beats of The Village Of Lu, open the Smuggler's Tunnel, and make your way to Pangzhen.

This includes completing the key objectives:

• Defeat Master Bi Yuan
• Defeat Master Bi Hai
• Explore the Smuggler's Tunnel
• Defeat Yuzan
• Defeat Mu Xiokui
• Use the puppet eye to open the passage to Pangzhen.

Once in Pangzhen, you'll then need to explore the city and progress far enough to reach the encounter with Gu Wanyue, The Wailing Wraith. She can be found singing by the well in the section of town marked on the screenshot below.

You'll need to face her in battle, and much like many other bosses, she has some threats to look out for. Here are the two key things to consider for the Gu Wanyue fight:

• At first, she will be invulnerable to your attacks, and you first need to weaken her by deflecting her purple fireball attacks back at her.
• Once she initiates her cloud of darkness attack, avoid trying to hit her or chase her, and get ready to hit a perfect dodge. She will end this phase with either an unblockable grab or a powerful fireball, so be ready to flip the momentum and create an opening for yourself.

After defeating Gu Wanyue in battle, she will jump down the well. Use your weapon to descend down the well after her, and you will be able to find the Mandate Encampment Key on the body found below.

Progressing forward will also set you up on the path to reach the back streets of Pangzhen and unlock the next set of objectives, but there will be bosses along the way. Continue following the path out of the well until you reach the next available bell. Now use it to fast travel back to the Mandate Encampment in the Village Of Lu.

Wan Jun Boss Location & How to Beat

Once you enter the Mandate Encampment, you will eventually fight your way through to the next gate, which is being guarded by a hulking boss known as Wan Jun, the Coppermaul.

This is an important fight that will unlock a new method of exploration as well as the path further into the Encampment, so everything you'll need to defeat Wan Jun can be found below.

Wan Jun Boss Location

Wan Jun can be found guarding the inner gate inside the Mandate Encampment. His exact location is specified on the map screenshot above. He's a big fella, so you won't miss him!

Do note that as you reach him you will need to pass through two open areas where archers / ranged magic users are positioned. You will either need to kill them off first and wipe out the enemies or avoid them completely for now.

Best Loadout for Wan Jun

By now you have enough variety in your weapons to personalize your build a bit. However, there are clear strengths that some weapons offer in this particular fight. A strong loadout is Outlaw Warblade / Fiend Saws / Dread Axe [Upgraded], and Hunter's Chain Sickle.

• Outlaw Warblade + Shenji's Ring has been a strong survivability combo from the early game due to self-replenish with lifesteal attacks and reduced guard break when blocking. It carries over well into this fight, as Wan Jun hits heavy and can get rid of your guard surprisingly fast. Make sure to also swap weapons frequently.
• Wan Jun is a big slow guy, using heavy attacks. This makes Fiend Saws incredibly strong as they deal high damage at a rapid pace, letting you chain combos between each of his hits, his wind-up animation, and when he falls.
• Dread Axe can be upgraded with Soul Temper as soon as you find Myst in Pangzhen. Go ahead and do so before this fight, as heaving a heavy impact weapon to match Wun Jun can be handy.
• Hunter's Chain Sickle is great for chaining hits during his charges and when he goes down, as it can deplete his health quite rapidly. For the most part, though, Outlaw Warblade's replenishing attack and the unblockable mode from Fiend Saws are going to be your bread and butter for this matchup.

Tips for the Wan Jun Fight

• Wan Jun's attack can kick up dust that partially obscures your vision. Try to dodge during key impact moments and fall back out of dust clouds.

• Wan Jun has an unblockable grab. It deals a massive amount of damage (if you've taken even a little damage, it will probably KO you), and this is your biggest threat when caught in the dust.
  • If you find yourself in the dust, hold your block and try to look for a red flash for a perfect dodge, as this can otherwise be deadly.

• When Wan Jun uses his ramming attack where he runs at you with your weapon, dodge, and then wait for him to stumble and fall. This is the best opportunity to unleash your combos, and the flurry of attacks from Fiend Saws is especially strong here.

• He will also stumble over at the end of his spinning weapon attack, so hold and time your block button to parry, and then unleash another set of attacks once he falls.
• During these moments when he has stumbled over, it can also be a cheap window for the Dread Axe, massively chipping away at his health and stagger bar.

Wan Jun Boss Rewards - Bashpole

After beating Wan Jun in battle, you will get the Bashpole. This is a destructive Phantom Edge that can be used to smash through broken terrain/floorboards, opening up new pathways to explore and hidden underground treasures.

You also need to use the Bashpole to continue moving through the Mandate Encampment. To do so, head over to the slight left of the gate Wan Jun was guarding and press the prompted button.

You will now break through the floor, opening up a new underground path. Follow it forward to travel deeper into the Mandate Encampment and towards the mysteries of the Seven Stars.
