Boss Strategy
This guide focuses on the Heroic Magatha Grimtotem encounter in Thousand Needles but also works for the normal version.
Minis in Magatha Grimtotem’s army
- Chain Lightning - Brilliant Flash
- Dark Iron Miner - Gold Mine
- Darkspear Troll - Headhunting
- Fire Elemental - Molten Core
- Ogre Mage - Avarice
- Prowler - Predatory Instincts
- Pyromancer - Pyroblast
Other minis and map mechanics
Magatha starts the fight with three Stonehoof Taurens by her side. They start moving towards your base through each lane. In Heroic, the Tauren have the Momentum talent. The Taurens respawn every 60 seconds in Normal and Heroic. In Quests and Surge, there is only one Tauren every 30 seconds.
Magatha Grimtotem:
- 5200 health
- Ranged attack: 80 Elemental damage, 1.5 seconds attack speed, 9 range
- Chain Lightning: 150 Elemental damage, 10 seconds cooldown, 5 range, bounces up to 20 targets in a range of 3
- Chain Heal: 100 healing, 3 seconds cooldown, 8 range, bounces up to 20 targets in a range of 5
General strategy
There are two main ways you can beat Magatha. You can play a normal game with a heavy focus on flying minis to be in a good position against all the Stonehoof Tauren, or you can kill Magatha with Unbound minis.
With a normal strategy, Footmen are a good tank because they can split push against the incoming Stonehoof Tauren. Other squad tanks may work too.
If you choose the faster Unbound strategy, you need to wait a little at the start for the Stonehoof Tauren to move away from Magatha. Then, play your tank, and then damage dealers behind Magatha. Because Magatha uses Chain Lightning, Whelp Eggs are bad against her: the Whelps will die to the lightning that pops the Eggs.
