Valor Mortis is a unique venture in the vast arena of Soulslikes, mainly due to its first-person format and the Ghostrunner DNA running through its veins. It’s a game that isn’t afraid to start you off on the back foot, and as a result, it takes a while before you gain access to a gun.
But, before long, you’ll uncover your first major side-quest. One that will help you navigate the broken bridge ahead, and get a new weapon for your arsenal into the bargain.
If you’re struggling to make sense of this quest, here is a quick guide on how to get your gun and get back to the Adjudant officer.
How To Get A Gun

To get your hands on a gun, you’ll need to make your way to the wrecked train carriage where the giver of the quest ‘An Unheard Farewell’ is hiding. You’ll be able to do this after beating the initial battlefield portion of the game, talking to Lucjah, and then navigating the immediate area, past the Risen Grenadier enemy.
He will then tell you that his squad got lost in the caves nearby and send you on your way to find them. To get where you need to go, you’ll need to use the broken bridge to platform down to a train carriage held up by some purple spikes.

Inside, you’ll find a gorgeous firearm that will be a huge help when navigating this next area, as well as taking out enemies at range.
How To Get Back To The Adjudant Officer
The good news is that you now have a gun. The bad news is that you are trapped at the bottom of this bridge, and need to find a way back up. Firstly, you’ll want to use your pistol to take out the orange, bulbous growths nearby, as this will clear the purple corruption and allow you to use the lift nearby.

Then you’ll want to switch to your fire power, as you’ll need to clear a webbed blockage leading into the cave. Inside, you’ll find what’s left of the Adjudant’s squad. A sentient mesh of flesh and bone. The best way to beat these enemies is to either shoot for their weak spots or rely on fire to inflict a burning status, and then keep your distance as they slowly burn up.

Further along this path, this takes you out to the cliffside where you will need to deal with a few enemies with rifles. Either move swiftly to close the distance, or take them out from range. Also, be aware that the ground will give out on you and drop you to a lower level, so try to jump just before engaging with the rifle enemy.
You can then use your pistol to free the elevator from the rest of the corruption, and then you can take it back down where the left side of the cave will be accessible. Inside, you’ll find a mini-boss, the squad commander. They are just a bulkier version of a standard enemy, so don’t panic too much, but don’t underestimate them either.

When you beat them, read the letter nearby confirming that the entire squad is now dead. You can also pick up some Pure Blade Material in a nearby chest. Then, use the nearby ladder and platforms outside to look back around, leading you back to the Adjudant.
Talk to him, and you can either lie or tell the truth, it doesn't matter which, as he will only believe your lie anyway. Then you will be awarded the Sleight of Hand Amber, ending this quest and allowing you to use your gun to clear the corruption on the bridge to progress onwards.
