Written by Callum Marshall - 3rd November 2026

In Phantom Blade Zero, once you reach the Mandate Encampment, if you happen to follow the path unlocked when you acquire the Mandate Valley Gate Key, you'll meet a boss that, if defeated, kicks off a new side quest for you to procrastinate on.

This quest sees you look for the belongings of three fallen heroes in the Mandate Encampment region. Items that aren't super easy to come by, as the place is a bit of a maze. However, we intend to help you take down the boss necessary to start this quest and help you find those items to get yourself a handy new accessory for your collection.

How To Beat Corpse-Eating Xue

To start this quest, you will need to beat the titular Xue, who can be found in the Mass Grave area, just beyond the door unlocked with the aforementioned Mandate Valley Gate Key.

This boss is a tricky one, as you'll not only be dealing with her, but also with a slew of her little undead minions. So, here is how we suggest you prepare, and some helpful tips on how to beat this boss:

Suggested Build

  • Weapon: Jagged Steel
  • Secondary Weapon: Wild Oriole Sword
  • Phantom Edge: Dread Axe or Bashpole
  • Accessories: Mother's Talisman, Reflex Device, Token of Pursuit, Battle Wraps
  • Medicines: Healing Gourd, Everflow

The key components of this build are the weapons, which are fast, one-handed options to ensure you're never locked in an animation and left a sitting duck to the crowd of undead. Plus, Mother's Talisman and Everflow are excellent options in multi-enemy battles, as you'll be able to gain HP back by killing and breaking the guard of fodder enemies.

Tips To Beat Corpse-Eating Xue

  • You need to nail the red-glowing prompts in this fight, as her grab attacks, where she pins you down and eats your flesh, are deadly.
  • While there is a bunch of enemies you need to contend with here, the best strategy is to focus all attention on Xue, as she eats her fallen minions to regain HP.
  • Try to keep as many enemies on screen as possible to ensure you aren't sucker-punched.
  • When you need to do some crowd control, use your phantom edge to hit multiple enemies and get some breathing space.

Hero's Belongings Locations

Defeating Xue will grant you a Wulin Tale with a list of items you will need to get to complete this quest. All of which can be found in the Mandate Encampment. Here is a map showing all three locations.

However, if you need a screenshot of where the item is precisely found in-game, we have you covered:

Black Scabbard

Just after you defeat Xue, you'll want to head to the right of her boss arena and follow the path uphill, which will take you to an area where you can also get a Guardian Idol Fragment. Continue along this path, through a cave, and you will come to the higher side of a broken bridge where you can collect the Black Scabbard.

Plain Hairpin

This is likely the second item that you will find of the three. This is found nearest to the Road to the Training Grounds Bell. Just beyond the bell in a courtyard area outside a building with two gargoyles on either side of the steps, you'll find a set of enemies. Defeat them, and you'll gain the Plain Hairpin.

Note: We were killed by a set of exploding red barrels that also killed the last of these enemies. If this happens, the item will spawn right beside the Road to the Training Grounds Bell.

Broken Iron Sword

The last item on this list requires you to defeat a boss at the heart of the Mandate Encampment. To reach the Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars Formation, you need to start at the Three Towers Bell and use the nearby ladder to drop into the arena with the flaming watchtowers.

Defeat this boss, and then head downstream, where you'll not only find the key for Moji's House. You'll also find the Broken Iron Sword.

Quest Rewards

To complete this quest, you then need to head back to Pangzhen and go to the Child of Insight, located at the top of the building nearest to the Pavilion of Knowledge Crossroads Bell. Speak to them, and they will reward you for collecting these items with the Sha-Chi Headscarf. An accessory that increases your Sha-Chi recovery by 15%.
