Phantom Blade Zero: How To Beat Wu Xuan The Fallen General

Written by Callum Marshall - 2nd November 2026

As you explore the now-desolate town of Pangzhen in Phantom Blade Zero, you'll come to find that just about every sentient thing still kicking around town wants you dead, and that goes double for the bosses within this region. However, Wu Xuan is probably the most likely of the bunch to make your demise a reality.

Not long after visiting Myst's Tavern, you'll come to the area where this brute will stand in your way, and only those who are able to break shields consistently will stand a chance of taking them down. So, if you need help breaking down Wu Xuan's stern defense, here is how to go about it.

Where Is Wu Xuan & How to Prepare

Wu Xuan is located in the Pangzhen region, and more specifically, just beyond the Backstreet Archway Bell.

If you're wondering how to set up for this fight, the key here is to rely on heavy-hitting moves, recharges for said moves, and accessories that help break down their resolute defense. Here is the build that we would suggest to do that:

  • Weapon: Jagged Steel
  • Secondary Weapon: Tianxuan Bronze Sword or Outlaw's Warblade
  • Phantom Edge: Dread Axe
  • Accessories: Shieldbreaker Talisman, Remnant Spark Cage, Token of Pursuit, Hunter's Insight
  • Medicines: Healing Gourd, Vessel Restorative

The key pillars of this build are the Shieldbreaker Talisman, the Remnant Spark Cage, and your secondary weapon. The two mentioned accessories allow you to use your Dread Axe consistently to break the boss's shield. Whereas your secondary weapon offers a high-shield-breaking option when you're not chasing bleed build-up with your Jagged Steel.

How To Beat Wu Xuan

The fight with Wu Xuan is pretty one-note, but because of their ridiculous shield, which regenerates every time you perform a critical attack, you'll need to master their moveset to stand a chance.

Here are the hints and tips we would suggest you take on board if you want to take down this brute:

  • To break his shield the first time, only use parries and standard attacks. Save your Dread Axe charges for later, as the boss is at their weakest during this initial period.
  • After the first time breaking his shield, get more aggressive and use your Dread Axe to break their second shield immediately, effectively skipping the second stage.
  • When the third phase begins, use whatever charges of the Dread Axe you have left; hopefully, your Remnant Charge Cage will have afforded you at least one or two.
  • During this third phase, try to dodge as much as possible, using blue and red prompts as punish windows to go on the offensive.
  • If you ever find yourself in the radius of their purple AOE attack, dodge frantically to get out of the blast zone.
  • Use your secondary weapon during shield-breaking phases, and during the stagger period, use your Jagged Steel.
  • Use your sword art attacks during the stagger period, as the shield eats these attacks, effectively wasting them.

Boss Rewards

Defeating this boss will allow you to explore the immediate area, where you will find the Pangzhen chapter of Quick Hand Zhang's hideouts. But you'll also get your hands on a new Phantom Edge called the Wolfjaw. This Phantom Edge allows you to lifesteal from enemies by driving your mace into them, but with the caveat that this will not have any effect when fighting Puppets, Golden Bodies, or Phantoms.
