How to Beat Ahzrak in Doom: The Dark Ages

Written by The Old One - 30th May 2025

The final battle in Doom: The Dark Ages is a challenging one, where you finally face Prince Ahzrak. The battle lasts for two whole levels. This walkthrough will guide you through both of these fights and tell you exactly how to take on the final boss of the game.

Enhanced Ahzrak (Chapter 21)

When the Doom Slayer first goes up against Ahzrak, the prince is in an enhanced state powered by the Heart of Argent. This fight has three phases.

Phase One

enhanced ahzrak phase 1 1

Ahzrak opens with chained melee attacks and projectile barrages. Start by peppering him with the Cycler until Shock gets applied, then follow up with Rocket Launcher or Chainshot. Make sure to equip the Heavenly Splitter Shield Rune, which will give you more chances to land cheap shots.

Ahzrak will also send slow-moving clones at you which grant health and armour when destroyed — just don’t lose track of what Ahzrak is doing behind them. When he’s stunned and ready for what seems like a takedown, just do more damage instead as it’s a trap.

Phase Two

enhanced ahzrak phase 2

Ahzrak will spawn heated spikes that can damage you on contact, but can easily be broken with a shield throw for health and armour. Careful not to throw when Ahzrak is on the offensive, though. Ahzrak becomes more aggressive as the fight goes on, often mixing in two or three-hit strings.

Stick with the Shock setup and rotate between your heavier weapons for quick damage. Circle-strafe to stay mobile, and don't let the metal spikes spam break your focus. Don’t forget to use your Dreadmace when given the chance!

Phase Three

The Prince of Hell summons a ring of clones that charge one by one, which you can parry or shoot — with the former granting you HP and armour. He’ll also launch a ring of blades at you in sequences, with just one green attack in each that you can parry.

As the fight continues, Ahzrak’s combos become more relentless with up to five or six chained hits. Prioritize parrying and healing with the Rocket Launcher until he’s defeated.

Witch & Ahzrak (Chapter 22)

ahzrak and witch 2

The fight begins with the Witch and Ahzrak teaming up. The two share the same health bar, and the Witch will always put a defensive bubble over herself or Ahzrak. Focus on whichever enemy does not have the bubble. Once again, apply Shock with the Cycler, then switch to something heavier. Ahzrak has a primary melee combo you can parry before using the Rocket Launcher, Chainshot, or Dreadmace to deal damage afterwards. After you deplete the health bar, the Slayer will take out the Witch, leaving Ahzark alone.

Ahzrak (Solo)

Now, Ahzrak becomes more aggressive but easier to predict. Keep using heavy-hitting weapons after successful parries, and with some patience and good timing, you will have defeated the Prince of Hell once and for all.

Ahzrak might not be the toughest boss the Doom franchise has thrown at us, but he certainly requires strong reflexes to beat. Hopefully, this guide will help you take him out.
