Midnight Leatherworking works very similar to how it has worked in the last expansions. If you are a seasoned leatherworker there’s not a lot of surprises here. In this guide we cover the few changes Leatherworking has received, how to level your Midnight Leatherworking, and recommend a few starter builds.
New to Leatherworking in Midnight
Leatherworking is overall remaining very similar to previous expansions, with only minor changes.
Only Two Ranks - Materials and consumables used and crafted by Leatherworkers in the Midnight Expansion will only come in two ranks, as opposed to three in recent expansions.
Leather and Mail Armor use both Materials - In previous expansions, recipes for Leather armour were generally mainly using leather and hides, and recipes for Mail armour mainly using scales and chitin. This is no longer the case and the materials overlap.
Decor and Lumber - At level 80 Midnight Leatherworking you will learn several decor recipes for housing. The recipes are expensive to craft and we have not recommended crafting them as part of our leveling guides. However if you know you want to make them for your own house, or to sell on the AH, remember to gather lumber as you level your character.
Moxie - As you gain knowledge you will also be gaining Moxie; which is the currency in Midnight for which you buy new recipes. Unlike Artisan's Acuity in the War Within, Moxie is now gathered separately for each profession, and you can’t use currency gained from one profession to “feed” into recipes for another profession. Moxie is also not used for recrafting gear, or crafting profession gear; just purely for buying from vendors.
Epic Profession Equipment - All professions will now have access to epic quality profession equipment. The uncommon green gear can still be bought and sold on the AH, while the rare and epic gear is Bind on Pickup and has to be ordered through the work order system. None of these crafts require Moxie.
Leatherworking Trainer Location
The Midnight Leatherworking trainer is Talmar, who can be located on the west side of the Bazaar in Silvermoon City, near the portal to the Timeways.

Leveling Midnight Leatherworking
Here we cover how to get your Midnight Leatherworking to 60 and how to approach skill beyond that. We have somewhat focused on earning knowledge points while leveling the profession quickly.
Profession Equipment
Before starting to level your profession, you may want to pick up some profession equipment. You can purchase cheap green equipment from the auction house, although availability early on in the expansion may be lower.
The Hideworker's Cover, Thalassian Leatherworker's Knife and the Leatherworker’s Toolset are all great to get you started. If you follow the guide below you will be making the Hideworker's Cover yourself.
When you upgrade to blue and epic quality we recommend starting with the Knife, then the Cover and finally the Toolset.
Materials Required
These are all the materials required to follow our guide to Midnight Leatherworking level 60.
- 668 x Void-Tempered Leather
- 567 x Void-Tempered Scales
- 2 x Void-Tempered Hide
- 75 x Silverleaf Thread
- 5 x Peerless Plumage
- 2 x Carving Canine
- 4 x Fantastic Fur
- 2 x Mote Of Pure Void
1 - 25 Bracers and Beyond
When you first pick up Leatherworking you will learn two Bracer recipes.
Craft items in the following order to avoid missing guaranteed skill-ups. Return to the trainer whenever you are missing a recipe:
- Scout's Scaled Bracers
- Smuggler's Leather Wristbands.
- Craft Skinner's Cap
- Craft Smuggler's Leather Footpads
- Craft Scout's Scaled Boots
- 1 of either the Eversong Botanist's Satchel or the Thalassian Scout Armor Kit.
- Craft Scout's Scaled Vest
- Craft Smuggler's Leather Tunic
- Skinner's Backpack
- Scout's Polished Wrap.
This will get you to 25 and unlock your first specialization. Pick the Learned Leatherworker specialization and put 5 points to unlock a sub-specialization. Pick the Waning Waste Tree and start to fill it out as you earn knowledge points from crafting as this will save you materials.
25 - 40 Profession Equipment
Once you have the Waning Waste Sub-specialization return to the trainer to learn new recipes. Then craft the following in this order to avoid missing guaranteed skill ups:
- Smuggler's Reinforced Binding
- Hideworker's Cover (equip if you don’t already have one)
- Scout's Polished Gauntlets’s (this is just for knowledge)
- Smuggler's Reinforced Gloves
- Tinker's Handguard
- Apprentice Jeweler's Apron
- Apprentice Smith's Apron
- Chemist's Cap
40 - 60 The Final Trainer Recipes
You are now at level 40 Midnight Leatherworking. Go to the trainer and learn two new recipes. Then craft the following, while returning to the trainer whenever you miss a recipe.
- Smuggler's Reinforced Shoulderguards
- Scout's Polished Spaulders
- Scout's Polished Legguards
- Smuggler's Reinforced Pants
At this point the trainer will have a final set of recipes for you to learn; if you disregard decor items which won’t unlock until level 80.
Craft the following in this order:
This should bring you to level 60 Midnight Leatherworking. Now all recipes you know will be yellow and not give a guaranteed skill up. But you have also unlocked two more subspecializations, which is where you need to go to find new recipes. If you want ideas on what specialization to pick, we have some suggestions below.
Note: You can continue crafting Void-Touched Drums for 5 more levels. The recipe will go green at 63, and grey at 65. Although you might need a lot of crafts to get to 65, you will likely be able to sell the drums on the AH.
Starter Leatherworking Knowledge Builds
We recommend one of 3 distinct Leatherworking Builds, to get you started in Midnight. One Leather armor crafter, one Mail armor crafter and a Armor kit and Embellishment crafter. All three will benefit from the points spent in Learned Leatherworker, if you followed our leveling guide above.
Leather Armor Crafter
This build is for those that want to focus on Leather armour recipes. Since end game players frequently use crafted bracers, belts, boots, and sometimes gloves; there should be opportunities to make some profit from work orders. We aren’t sure which crafted piece will be the most popular, but whatever order you unlock your recipes, they will never be useless, as you can still do patron orders.
To begin, unlock Lasting Leather as your second specialization. Immediately spend 10 points to unlock a sub-specialization. You can pick either Securely Shaped or Embroidered Ensembles - make your own choice based on which recipes you prefer to learn first.
Place 5 points in whichever specialization you just picked, which opens access to another sub-specialization and a corresponding recipe. Again, when making this decision, we recommend bracers, belts, boots or gloves.
Once you have learned your first recipe, we recommend slowly picking up more recipes by placing points in Securely Shaped/Embroidered Ensembles to pick up the other sub-specializations and learning their recipes. Then fill out the Lasting Leather wheel to reach the sub-specializations on the other side of the tree. You might also be able to find some recipes from Dungeons, Raids, Reputations and Delves.
To finish this build off, in the Learned Leatherworker specialization, place 10 points to learn a second sub-specialization. Take the bottom talent, Concentrated Crafter, so you are better able to concentrate on crafts.
At this point place your points as you like.
Mail Armor Crafter
This build is focused on crafting Mail armor. Since end game players frequently use crafted bracers, belts, boots, and sometimes gloves; there should be opportunities to make some profit from work orders. We aren’t sure which crafted piece will be the most popular, but whatever order you unlock your recipes, they will never be useless, as you can still do patron orders.
Unlock the Safeguarding Scales as your second specialization. Spend 10 points in the main wheel to unlock a sub-specialization. You can pick either Advanced Armor or Bolstered Bulwark - make your own choice based on which recipes you prefer to learn first.
Then place 5 points in whichever you picked, which opens the option to choose a further subspecialization and a corresponding recipe. Again, when making this decision, we recommend bracers, belts, boots or gloves.
Once you have learned your first recipe, we recommend slowly picking up more recipes by placing points in Advanced Armor/ Bolstered Bulwark to pick up the other sub-specializations and learning their recipes. Then fill out the Safeguarding Scales wheel to reach the gear on the other side of the tree. You might also be able to find some recipes from Dungeons, Raids, Reputations and Delves.
Finally to finish this build off, in the Learned Leatherworker specialization place 10 points to learn a second sub-specialization and take the bottom talent, Concentrated Crafter, so you are better able to concentrate on crafts.
At this point place your points as you like.
Embellishment and Armor Kit Crafting build
Most leatherworkers tend to go into either mail or leather gear as their first specialisation. If you want to do something different, you can choose to go into Armor Kits and Embellishments, and for example become a specialist leg enchant crafter.
To start, unlock the Flawless Forte specialization, and place 10 points in this wheel to unlock a further sub-specialization. Pick Commanding Commodities, which lets you further specialize immediately. Picking the bottom node, Overwhelming Optionals, will give you the Devouring Banding Embellishment recipe. We are unsure if this will be good or used by any class, however the materials are relatively cheap and it can be crafted with guaranteed skill ups all the way to level 80.
Then place 15 more points in Commanding Commodities to unlock another sub-specialization, and pick the top node that will unlock the Blood Knight's Armor Kit. This recipe is fairly expensive to craft, but will give guaranteed skill all the way to level 80, while also being used by all tank specializations as the preferred leg enchant.
Place 10 points in Learned Leatherworker, to unlock another sub-specialization. Pick Mastering Multicraft, and fill it out to get a large amount of multicraft. Then continue to place points in either Crucial Consumables or Overwhelming Optionals to increase the quality you craft Embellishments or Leg Armors at.
To finish off this build you can fill out Command Commodities to unlock the final sub-specialization, Brimming Basics, and fill that in to increase the quality with which you craft Scalewoven Hide, Infused Scalewoven Hide, Silvermoon Weapon Wrap and Sin'dorei Armor Banding. All of which will be sought after on the auction house.
From this point on, place your points as you like.
Where to obtain Knowledge Points
You earn a knowledge point every time you craft a new recipe. In addition you can earn knowledge points weekly from several sources which we have in the table below.
| Knowledge Source | Knowledge Points |
| Weekly Quest | 3 |
| Patron Crafting Orders | 16 |
| Repeatable Treasures and Drops | 2 |
| Thalassian Treatise on Leatherworking | 1 |
Profession Treasures
There are a total of 8 profession treasures scattered around Midnight Zones, which award a one time only 3 knowledge points each. We have a full guide with their locations in our Profession Treasures Location Guide.
Faction Profession Knowledge
Once you reach renown 6 with Amani Tribe in Zul’Aman, you can buy 10 Leatherworking Knowledge from Magovu for 75 Artisan’s Leatherworker's Moxie and 750 Voidlight Marl.
Darkmoon Faire
When Darkmoon Faire is active, you can gain 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a short quest from Sayge Called Writing the Future.
We recommend leaving this as late as possible to get the most value out of the increased skill points.
Best Race for the Leatherworking Profession
While all races are perfectly fine for Leatherworking, no race specifically buffs leatherworking, but Kul Tiran does have Jack of All Trades which increases all profession skills by 2.
Best Professions to Pair with Leatherworking
We recommend pairing Leatherworking with Skinning to collect your own resources.
We hope this Leatherworking Profession leveling guide helped you get started with this crafting profession. For more Midnight content you can check out all of our Midnight Guides.
