Midnight Blacksmithing Profession Guide: Leveling, Changes and Knowledge Builds

Written by Roguery - 26th February 2026

Midnight Blacksmithing works very similar to how it has worked in the last expansions and if you are a seasoned blacksmith there’s not a lot of surprises. In this guide we cover the few changes Blacksmithing has received, how to level your Midnight Blacksmithing, and a recommended starter build.

New to Blacksmithing in Midnight

Blacksmithing is receiving very few changes, however, there are a few nice quality of life additions.

Only Two Ranks of Materials - Materials used and crafted by Blacksmiths in the Midnight Expansion will only come in two ranks, as opposed to three in recent expansions.

Everburning Forge Removed - In The War Within the Everburning Forge Ignition was an item which buffed your profession stats when used. The specialization tree connected to the Forge Ignition had no benefit if you didn’t click the item to get the buff. In Midnight that tree is replaced with The Old Ways which will work similarly but without an item to click. Instead you will get the buffs all the time.

Moxie - As you gain knowledge you will also be gaining Moxie; which is the currency in Midnight for which you buy new recipes. Unlike Artisan's Acuity in the War Within, Moxie is now gathered separately for each profession, and you can’t use currency gained from one profession to “feed” into recipes for another profession. Moxie is also not used for recrafting gear, or crafting profession gear; just purely for buying from vendors.

Epic Profession Equipment - All professions will now have access to epic quality profession equipment. The uncommon green gear can still be bought and sold on the AH, while the rare and epic gear is Bind on Pickup and has to be ordered through the work order system. None of these crafts require Moxie.

Leveling Midnight Blacksmithing

Here we cover how to level your Midnight Blacksmithing to level 50, with a focus on gaining knowledge while spending as little gold and resources as possible. Past level 50 it gets harder and you will need to specialize into a knowledge tree for new recipes.

Profession Equipment

Before starting to level your profession, you may want to pick up some profession equipment. You can purchase cheap green equipment from the auction house, although availability early on in the expansion may be lower.

Plans: Sunforged Blacksmith's Hammer, Thalassian Blacksmith's Toolbox, and Pattern: Earthen Forgemaster's Apron are all great to start with. The Hammer you will be crafting yourself if you follow the guide below.

When you upgrade to blue and epic quality we recommend starting with the Hammer, then the Toolbox, and finally the Apron.

List of Materials Required

If you follow the guide below you will be using the following materials to get to level 50 Blacksmithing.

The number of ingots you need to craft in total are:

Level 1 - 15 Crafting Ingots

To start off Midnight Blacksmithing you will only have a single recipe: Refulgent Copper Ingot. This recipe goes yellow at 5 green at 10 and finally grey at 15.

You will need more Copper Ingots than these but we recommend stopping once you hit 15, as some knowledge points later on will give you resourcefulness so you may get some mats back.

15 - 30 The Old Ways

Return to the trainer to learn new recipes.

Craft these items in the following order to avoid missing skill ups. If you are missing a recipe, return to the trainer to learn it:

At this point you can unlock your first specialization. We recommend unlocking The Old Ways, then the sub-specialisation Resourceful Smith which grants Resourcefulness. Now you can craft the rest of the Refulgent Copper Ingot.

30 - 50 Towards a Second Specialization

Learn all the new recipes from the trainer. Again, make sure to craft these recipes in the following order to not miss any skill ups:

50 and Beyond

At this point you can still repeat some yellow and green recipes for levels. However, you’ve just unlocked a second specialization, so we recommend that you use recipes learned through the knowledge trees instead. If you don’t know which specialization you want to go for, we have some suggestions below.

Starter Blacksmithing Knowledge Build

If you followed our leveling guide you will have chosen The Old Ways as your first specialization. Your second specialization unlocked at level 50, and you will unlock the further two at level 60 and 75.

Weaponsmithing Build

This build is focused on making weapons. Many people want a crafted weapon early in a patch or expansion, and most weapons are made by blacksmiths. That means there is a big potential for profit here, no matter which type of weapons you go into first.

At level 50 Midnight Blacksmithing, unlock Weaponsmithing, and choose a sub-specialization. We recommend choosing Hafted Weapons, and placing 15 points here to unlock both sub-specializations. This will teach you 4 new recipes.

Once you have done this, place 15 points in the main Weaponsmithing wheel to unlock Blades. Spend points in Blades to further unlock both Long and Short Blades, as well as 5 new recipes. This will give you a great starting point to fill work orders as you will know all weapon types without using too many knowledge points. Now focus on finishing the Hafted Weapons and Blades wheels, to be able to use finishing reagents when you craft your recipes.

Beyond this point, spend your knowledge as you prefer.

Armorsmithing Build

This build focuses on crafting plate armor. Armorsmithing is very similar to Weaponsmithing, although it takes a lot more knowledge points to get all the recipes. Since end game players frequently use crafted bracers, belts, boots, and sometimes gloves; there should be opportunities to make some profit from work orders. There is also the option to craft Shields which many Shield-users might want. We aren’t sure which crafted piece will be the most popular, but whatever order you unlock your recipes, they will never be useless, as you can still do patron orders.

Once you have 50 blacksmithing and unlock the Armorsmithing specialization, you will immediately get the option to choose a sub-specialization. Pick Articulating Armor and place 10 points in this wheel to unlock two subspecializations, Belts and Vambracers. Now you also learned 2 new recipes.

Place 15 points in the Armorsmithing wheel to unlock another subspecialization and opt for Large Plate armor and immediately unlock Shields, which will grant the Shield recipe.

Spend another 15 points in the main wheel to open Sculpted Armor and Sabatons.

Finally place 20 points to fill out Articulating Armor, and unlock Gauntlets and be able to craft gloves, bracers and belts using finishing reagents.

From now on, place your points as you like.

PvP Recipes - Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths

PvP recipes are probably going to be very lucrative to craft at the start of the expansion. The gear pieces have decent item level to get people started, and the recipes are found while randomly doing Battlegrounds or Purchased for Honor.

All of the recipes are BoE, which means they will be sold on the auction house. At the start of the expansion they are usually very expensive, but if you are farming PvP and get a recipe, or manage to get hold of a cheap recipe early, it's definitely worth learning. These recipes grant guaranteed skill ups until 60 and turn green at 65. They are also quite often found as patron orders as well as public orders.

Where to obtain Knowledge Points

You earn a knowledge point every time you craft a new recipe. In addition you can earn knowledge points weekly from several sources which we have in the table below.

Knowledge Source Knowledge Points
Weekly Quest 2
Patron Crafting Orders 16
Repeatable Treasures and Drops 4
Thalassian Treatise on Inscription 1

Profession Treasures

There are a total of 8 profession treasures scattered around Midnight Zones, which award a one time only 3 knowledge points each. We have a full guide with their locations in our Profession Treasures Location Guide.

Faction Profession Knowledge

Once you reach renown 9 with Singularity in the Voidstorm, you can buy 10 Blacksmithing Knowledge from Void Researcher Anomander for 75 Artisan’s Blacksmith’s Moxie and 750 Voidlight Marl.

Darkmoon Faire

When Darkmoon Faire is active, you can gain 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a short quest from Sayge called Writing the Future.

We recommend leaving this as late as possible, to get the most value out of the increased skill points.

Best Race for the Blacksmithing Profession

While all races are perfectly fine for Blacksmithing, a few have some bonuses that will have a minor impact.

  • Dark Iron Dwarf - Has the Mass Production Passive which increases skill by 5 and Crafting speed by 10%.
  • Light-Forged Draenei - Their Forge of Light increases skill by 5 and lets the summon a forge.
  • Kul Tiran - Have Jack of All Trades which increases all profession skills by 2.

Best Professions to Pair with Blacksmithing

We recommend pairing Blacksmithing with Mining to collect your own resources, or perhaps Engineering or Jewelcrafting as it uses the same resources.

We hope this Blacksmithing Profession leveling guide helped you get started with this crafting profession. For more Midnight content you can check out all of our Midnight Guides.
