Midnight Inscription Profession Guide: Leveling, Changes and Knowledge Builds

Midnight Inscription Profession Guide: Leveling, Changes and Knowledge Builds

Written by Roguery - 26th February 2026

Inscription is getting very few changes in Midnight, the knowledge trees and the items you can craft will be pretty much the same as in The War Within. In this guide we cover the few changes Inscription has received, how to level your Midnight Inscription, and a recommended starter build.

New to Inscription in Midnight

Inscription is not receiving a huge amount of changes, however there are a few small but important changes.

Only Two Ranks of Materials

Materials and consumables used and crafted by Inscription in the Midnight Expansion will only come in two ranks, as opposed to three in recent expansions.

Darkmoon Deck changes

Scribes will now be able to craft more powerful versions of Darkmoon Decks, which require Sparks to craft. Possibly this will mean that the Decks are wanted as trinkets by other players, which hasn’t really been the case in recent years.

There will also be a base version of the Darkmoon Deck, which is just put together by collecting cards. This base version we don’t think will be popular, as it’s very under budget compared to other trinkets of the same item level.

Darkmoon cards still drop from mobs, in Midnight. However scribes will also be able to convert inks and Thallasian Essence of the Faire into Darkmoon Cards, which should make the base decks even easier to obtain compared to previous expansions.

Moxie

As you gain knowledge you will also be gaining Moxie; which is the currency in Midnight for which you buy new recipes. Unlike Artisan's Acuity in the War Within, Moxie is now gathered separately for each profession, and you can’t use currency gained from one profession to “feed” into recipes for another profession. Moxie is also not used for recrafting gear, or crafting profession gear; just purely for buying from vendors.

Epic Profession Equipment

All professions will now have access to epic quality profession equipment. The uncommon green gear can still be bought and sold on the AH, while the rare and epic gear is Bind on Pickup and has to be ordered through the work order system. None of these crafts require Moxie.

Inscription Trainer Location

The Midnight Inscription trainer, Zantasia, is found in the Bazaar area of Silvermoon. She is on the east side, just a little north of the Murder Row.

Leveling Midnight Inscription

Here we cover how to level your Midnight Inscription to max, with a focus on gaining knowledge while spending as little gold and resources as possible. The first 90 levels are going to be fairly easy, while the last 10 will be difficult to find the crafts, especially early on.

Materials Required

This is a rough outline of all the materials required to follow our guide. For certain yellow crafts you may need more or less, depending on if you receive a skill up. We have tried to overestimate rather than underestimate.

Profession Equipment

Before starting to level your profession, you may want to pick up some profession equipment. You can purchase cheap green equipment from the auctionhouse, although availability early on in the expansion may be lower.

The Hobbyist Scribe's Quill, Fantastic Font Focuser and Bold Biographer's Bifocals are all great to get started. If you purchase a Hobbyist Scribe's Quill, still craft one later on. When you upgrade to blue and epic quality we recommend upgrading your Quill, then the Focuser, and finally the Bifocals.

Level 1 - 20 Milling

At the start of Inscription you will only have access to one recipe, Midnight Milling. Milling uses 10 herbs, and you receive pigments depending on what Midnight Herb you crushed. The quality of the herb doesn’t increase the amount of pigment you receive, just your skill. So use whatever quality herb is cheapest for leveling, and don’t mill more of a herb than what we listed above.

  • Mill herbs until level 20.

Level 21 - 25 Learning Calm Hands

Once you hit 20 you can learn a few new recipes from the inscription trainer that you can craft.

At this point craft:

This should get you to level 25, or just above, where you can unlock your first specialization. Choose Calm Hands and spend 10 knowledge points to completely fill the main wheel, unlocking all three sub-specializations.

Level 26 - 35 Crafting a Quill

Return to the Inscription Trainer to learn new recipes, then craft the following items:

Level 35-50 Unlocking the Treatise Recipe

Return to the trainer and learn the four Talassian Missive recipe crafts. The Aurora and Feverflare are yellow and may not give a skill up, but don’t worry you can catch up later.

Craft in the following order:

At this point you will be between 37 and 39, but will have access to the Thalassian Treatise on Inscription.

  • Craft Thalassian Treatise on Inscription until level 45.

Then return to the trainer for new recipes, and craft in the following order to reach level 50:

Note: When crafting any Treatise you have a chance to discover the recipe for another profession. We recommend always crafting the new one once for the profession knowledge. You can place them in your warbound bank for an alt, or use the work order system to craft them for other people.

50 - 90 Vantus Rune and More Treatise

At this point you should have reached level 50, and can learn Vantus Rune: Radiant. Craft a single of these for the profession knowledge and then continue crafting Treatises until level 90 Midnight Inscription. The recipes will turn yellow at 80 and green at 90. We don’t recommend continuing crafting past 90 as you should have more than enough treatises for all of your characters at this point. But if you need more, continue crafting until you have enough. They go gray at 95.

  • Craft Thalassian Treatises until level 90.

90 - 100 Weapons or Profession Equipment

Once you reach level 90 we suggest that you either buy new recipes from the Moxie-vendor, or unlock new recipes with the knowledge trees to take you the final 10 levels to 100. If you are unsure of which knowledge tree you want to go for first, we have some suggestions.

Starter Inscription Knowledge Build

Inscription is the easiest crafting profession to level to max, and you need just a few expensive crafts in the end to get to 100. This means you don’t really have to think about “how to get recipes to level up?” and can just focus on what you want to make at max level. We have two suggestions for builds, and both of them expect you to have followed the leveling guide above and already placed 10 points in Calm Hands.

The Blueprints Build

This build is focused on making weapons and profession tools. Since end game players frequently use crafted weapons and offhands, there should be opportunities to make some profit from work orders. The same goes for profession tools during the first weeks of Midnight.

Unlock Blueprints as your second specialisation, which opens access to the sub-specializations below. Choose Field Research, and then immediately Staves. Place 15 points in Staves to learn two different staff recipes. Now you have something to get patron orders for, and move you to level 100.

At this point choose if you prefer to first focus on a) weapons or b) tools. If you choose tools, do step 2 before step 1.

  1. Spend 15 points in Field Research to unlock another subspecialization. We predict the offhand to be more popular than the bow, so we suggest choosing Lamps and Lanterns, and then placing 15 points in that node to learn an offhand recipe.
  2. Spend 30 points to fill out the main Blueprints wheel. Unlock Market Research and fill this wheel out as well with 30 points, to learn all three profession tool recipes.

At this point place your points as you like.

Perfect Products Build

This build is focused on making Contracts, Missives and Vantus Runes, as well as making you better at making your own reagents. When it comes to your own reagents, you will never be able to make rank 2 reagents from rank 1 mats, so you should skill up the following order: first get to rank 2 pigments, then rank 2 inks and lastly rank 2 ciphers. Early in Midnight, there should be great opportunities for profiting off this build, both by selling rank 2 materials as well as rank 2 missives and contracts on the auction house.

First spend 5 points to get a good patron work order recipe. Choose Blueprints as your second specialization, then unlock Field Research and further unlock Staves. Place 5 points in Staves to learn a Staff recipe.

Now choose Perfect Products as your third specialization. There are no recipes to learn in this tree, so place 30 points in the main wheel to fill it up, and unlock both subspecializations. Unlock Perfect Missives and Perfect Milling on either side of the tree.

Here you have two options: 1) if you prefer to buy your reagents or 2) if you prefer to mill and craft them yourself. If you prefer to buy your own mats, skip step 1 and go directly to step 2.

  1. Fill up the Processing wheel to max and unlock Perfect Inks and Perfect Ciphers. Then max the Perfect Milling wheel, to be able to get rank 2 pigments. Do the same in the Perfect Ink wheel, to be able to make rank 2 inks out of the rank 2 pigments. Now continue to step 2.
  1. Fill up the Parchment wheel, unlocking Perfect Contracts and then Perfect Vantus Runes.

In the Calm Hands specialization, fill out Dextrous Diligens to increase your multicraft significantly. Then fill out the Keen Eye wheel right next to it, to get more materials back when crafting.

Finally return to Perfect Products to fill in either Perfect Missives, Perfect Contracts or Perfect Vantus Runes, depending on your preference.

From this point on, place your points as you like.

Where to obtain Knowledge Points

You earn a knowledge point every time you craft a new recipe. In addition you can earn knowledge points weekly from several sources which we have in the table below.

Knowledge Source Knowledge Points
Weekly Quest 3
Patron Crafting Orders 16
Repeatable Treasures and Drops 4
Thalassian Treatise on Inscription 1

Profession Treasures

There are a total of 8 profession treasures scattered around Midnight Zones, which award a one time only 3 knowledge points each. We have a full guide with their locations in our Profession Treasures Location Guide.

Faction Profession Knowledge

Once you reach renown 6 with Hara’ti in Harandar, you can buy 10 Inscription Knowledge from Naynar for 75 Artisan’s Scribe's Moxie and 750 Voidlight Marl.

Darkmoon Faire

When Darkmoon Faire is active, you can gain 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a short quest from Sayge Called Talkin' Tonks.

We recommend leaving this as late as possible to get the most value out of the increased skill points.

Best Race for the Inscription Profession

While all races are perfectly fine for Inscription, a few have some bonuses that will have a minor impact.

  • Nightborne - Their Ancient History increases Inscription skill by 5.
  • Kul Tiran - Have Jack of All Trades which increases all profession skills by 2.

Best Professions to Pair with Inscription

We recommend pairing Inscription with Herbalism to collect your own resources, or perhaps Alchemy as it uses the same resources.
