Midnight Engineering Profession Guide: Leveling, Changes and Knowledge Builds

Midnight Engineering Profession Guide: Leveling, Changes and Knowledge Builds

Written by Roguery - 25th February 2026

Engineering in Midnight has had a few changes, looking to be a bit more useful than in previous expansions outside of just having all the cool gadgets. In this guide we cover the changes Engineering has received, how to level your Midnight Engineering, and recommend a few starter builds.

New to Engineering in Midnight

In Midnight, Engineering is receiving a bit of a rework making the profession a little less complex and easier to approach.

Only Two Ranks

Materials and consumables used and crafted by Engineers in the Midnight Expansion will only come in two ranks, as opposed to three in recent expansions.

No More Spare Parts

Spare Parts are not a part of Midnight Engineering, and no similar feature is introduced as a replacement. This means Engineers no longer need to farm materials themselves, and can now get all their materials from the AH, or from Mining alts.

Recycling Everything

In The War Within, there was a whole procedure around learning new recipes, with scrap and prototypes and notes. That system is now gone, and replaced with a new system called Recycling, which is a lot simpler.

With Recycling you turn 5 parts into 1-3 materials you need for crafting (Evercore or Aetherlume). Sometimes you learn a random new recipe. That is the whole process. The only recyclable materials made by engineers are Song Gear or Soul Sprocket.. However you can also recycle items from other crafting professions: materials such as Alloys, Inks and Hides, but also consumables such as Missives, Weapon wraps and Darkmoon Sigils. This means that low rank consumables made by other professions while leveling up, and usually sold for cheap on the AH, can now be vacuumed up by engineers to recycle into Evercore or Aetherlume.

Making Ammunition and Scopes

After taking a break from hunter consumables in the War Within, we are now back at it again. In Midnight, engineers will be making Ammunition. It won’t be similar to how ammunition worked in early WoW, where hunters spent one bullet per gun-shot. Instead it is now a consumable item which applies a 1 hour buff, like Mana Oils and Sharpening Stones. Engineers will also be making Scopes, for ranged weapons, which hunters can use instead of traditional enchants.

Decor and Lumber

At level 80 Midnight Engineering you will learn several decor recipes for housing. The recipes are expensive to craft and we have not recommended crafting them as part of our leveling guides. However if you know you want to make them for your own house, or to sell on the AH, remember to gather lumber as you level your character.

Moxie

As you gain knowledge you will also be gaining Moxie; which is the currency in Midnight for which you buy new recipes. Unlike Artisan's Acuity in the War Within, Moxie is now gathered separately for each profession, and you can’t use currency gained from one profession to “feed” into recipes for another profession. Moxie is also not used for recrafting gear, or crafting profession gear; just purely for buying from vendors.

Epic Profession Equipment

All professions will now have access to epic quality profession equipment. The uncommon green gear can still be bought and sold on the AH, while the rare and epic gear is Bind on Pickup and has to be ordered through the work order system. None of these crafts require Moxie.

Engineering Trainer Location

The engineering trainer, Danwe, is located in the West side of the Bazaar in Silvermoon City, south of the bridge to the Isle of Quel’danas.

Leveling Midnight Engineering

How to best level Midnight Engineering will vary from person to person, due to the randomness of which recipes you happen to discover through recycling. For that reason we have given more of an outline rather than a specific leveling route.

Profession Equipment

Before starting to level your profession, you may want to pick up some profession equipment. You can purchase cheap green equipment from the auction house, although availability early on in the expansion may be lower.

The Junker's Multitool, Junker's Junk Visor and Tinker's Handguard are a great start. We do not recommend purchasing the Junker's Multitool, as you can craft this almost immediately.

When you upgrade to blue and epic quality gear, we recommend starting with the Multi-tool, then the Visor, and finally the Handguard.

1 - 35 Recycling

The Recycle ability can be used all the way from 1 to 30 to consistently receive skill ups, going green at 32 and finally grey at 35. Do not just recycle your own parts. Instead check the AH for recyclable materials and consumables from other professions, and perhaps favorite the ones that seem the most lucrative to buy.

We recommend first crafting:

Then continue recycling until you hit level 35.

Now you can unlock your first specialization. Pick the Recycling tree, which immediately gives you access to a sub-specialization. Pick Resourcefulness and fill it out, as this works with a lot of engineering recipes.

35 Onwards

From here on the crafts will be different depending on what recipes you happen to have learned. Craft items you have learned, and prioritise those that give knowledge points. Once you run out of first craft recipes, continue to recycle to learn new ones.

Once you hit 50, pick a specialisation and learn more recipes from the knowledge tree. If you are unsure what to pick, consider one of the Knowledge builds below.

Starter Engineering Knowledge Build

Engineering looks to be an interesting profession when it comes to Knowledge Builds, being able to craft potential powerful single secondary stat Bracers, Boots and Helmets. The other options are going to be to craft the new ammo or the large amount of profession equipment.

The Equipment Build

The equipment which Engineers can craft is: bracers, boots, helmets, and guns.

Regarding helmets, bracers and boots, the engineering crafted ones will have only one singular secondary stat on them, as opposed to 2 secondary stats on the same slots crafted by Blacksmiths, Leatherworkers and Tailors. Classes or Specs that heavily prefer one stat might thus want for example Engineering bracers over other crafted bracers. Bracers and boots are also very commonly crafted gear slots for high end players. Specialising in these crafts can likely bring some profit from work-orders all throughout the expansion, but especially early on.

Regarding guns, hunters will frequently want a crafted weapon, especially as their first spark craft. While we can’t say if the Engineering gun or the bow from Inscription will be more in demand, there should be good opportunities to profit from specialising into guns.

To start this build you will unlock the Combat Analytics at 50 skill, then place 20 points in this wheel to unlock guns, bracers and boots. Although it will cost a lot of points we recommend placing 15 points in both the boots and bracers to unlock access to all armor types of those crafts.

Then fill out the wheel that you want to focus on crafting first. We suggest the gun, as we suspect this could be a popular choice with hunters early in the expansion. If you fill the wheel, and use the highest quality Aetherlume and Evercore, even while wearing green quality profession equipment, you will be able to craft the items at max rank without concentrating.

Once you hit 60 skill and unlock your 3rd sub spec, learn Bits and Bots which will also unlock a sub-specialization. Pick Bits and fill out all 30 points means that when you recycle you sometimes receive materials back and you will also be able to get the Highest level Aetherlume and Evercore from recycling materials that you can then either use to craft or to sell on the AH.

Profession Equipment Build

Engineers can craft more profession equipment recipes than most other crafting professions, with 6 different professions items in total. Considering that blue quality profession gear no longer requires Moxie (the equivalent of Artisan Aquity), it is likely that other players will be looking for blue profession gear crafts more frequently and earlier into the expansion, than before. And on top of that many people will want epic profession gear eventually. Specialising in making this gear could thus both be helping you to level up to 100, and to make some profit, at least early into Midnight.

We recommend unlocking the Market Mobility tree at level 50 Midnight Engineering. This immediately unlocks a sub-specialization. Choose Mandatory Tools, and then pick Engineering Tools as the sub-specialisation. This will let you craft your own tool first.

Place 10 points in Mandatory Tools to unlock the two other sub-specializations, teaching you Tailoring and Jewelcrafting tools which you can do work orders for.

Then place 25 points in Market Mobility to unlock Finishing Touches, and place 10 points there to unlock all three further sub-specializations. Now you will be able to craft all 6 blue quality profession items.

Now place 5 points each in Engineering Tools, Jewelcrafting Tools and Tailoring Tools, which will let you use missives to determine the stats of the profession tools.

From this point start placing points in the profession gear that you want to craft at the best quality. If you have maxed the wheel, you don’t have to concentrate when crafting blue quality profession equipment, as long as the best materials are used. You can then also purchase the epic recipes from the Engineering Vendor.

When you reach level 60, unlock the Bit and Bots tree and specialize into Bits, without spending any points here. When you feel done placing points in the Market Mobility trees, place 30 points in Bits to improve recycling, so you can produce the best quality Aetherlume and Evercore.

Ammunition and Gadgets Build

If you want to hone in on making Ammunition for hunters and other gadgets, we think this is the build to go for.

To begin, select the Bits and Bots specialization at level 50. Place 30 points in Bits, which will improve your recycling and let resourcefulness work with it.

Then place an additional 30 points in the main Bits and Bots wheel to unlock the second sub-specialization.

Go to the Recycling tree and place 15 points to unlock the second sub-specialization. Pick Multicraft, and place 20 points to gain 10% Multicraft, while also increasing the amount you gain from a multicraft proc.

At this point place your points as you like.

Where to obtain Knowledge Points

You earn a knowledge point every time you craft a new recipe. In addition you can earn knowledge points weekly from several sources which we have in the table below.

Knowledge Source Knowledge Points
Weekly Quest 1
Patron Crafting Orders 16
Repeatable Treasures and Drops 2
Thalassian Treatise on Engineering 1

Unique Profession Treasures

There are a total of 8 profession treasures scattered around Midnight Zones, which award a one time only 3 knowledge points each. We have a full guide with their locations in our Profession Treasures Location Guide.

Faction Profession Knowledge

Once you reach renown 9 with Singularity in the Voidstorm, you can buy 10 Profession Knowledge from Void Researcher Anomander for 75 Artisan’s Engineer’s Moxie and 750 Voidlight Marl.

Darkmoon Faire

When Darkmoon Faire is active, you can gain 2 skill points and 3 knowledge points by completing a short quest from Sayge called Writing the Future.

We recommend leaving this as late as possible to get the most value out of the increased skill points.

Best Race for the Engineering Profession

While all races are perfectly fine for Engineering, a few have some bonuses which will have a minor impact.

  • Gnome - Their Engineering Specialization increases Engineering skill by 5.
  • Kul Tiran - Have Jack of All Trades which increases all profession skills by 2.

Best Professions to Pair with Engineering

We recommend pairing Engineering with Mining to collect your own resources, or perhaps Blacksmithing or Jewelcrafting as they use the same resources.
