Openers

Devourer doesn’t have a set opener due to not being able to cast Void Metamorphosis instantly. However, I’ve provided examples of how an opener should look like in the beginning of an encounter.

Void-Scarred Caster:

  1. Cast Consume 1 second before pull
  2. Reap
  3. Consume
  4. Cast Void Ray at 100 Fury
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until Void Metamorphosis is available
  6. Voidblade
  7. Void Metamorphosis
  8. On-use trinket + Potion Of Recklessness
  9. Pierce The Veil
  10. Void Ray
  11. Collapsing Star
  12. Cull
  13. Cull
  14. Devour

Void-Scarred Melee:

  1. Cast Consume 1 second before pull
  2. Reap
  3. Consume
  4. Cast Void Ray at 100 Fury
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 until Void Metamorphosis is available
  6. Voidblade
  7. The Hunt
  8. Void Metamorphosis
  9. On-use trinket + Potion Of Recklessness
  10. Void Ray
  11. Cull
  12. Cull
  13. Reaper's Toll
  14. Vengeful Retreat
  15. Pierce The Veil
  16. Predator's Wake
  17. Cull
  18. Void Ray
  19. Cull
  20. Devour

Annihilator:

  1. Cast Soul Immolation 2 seconds before pull
  2. Cast Consume 1 second before pull
  3. Consume
  4. Soul Immolation when the previous one is no longer active
  5. Cast Consume until 100 Fury or 3 stacks of Voidfall
  6. Reap at 3 stacks of Voidfall
  7. Void Ray
  8. Void Metamorphosis
  9. On-use trinket + Potion Of Recklessness
  10. Void Ray
  11. Voidblade to apply Devourer's Bite, if talented
  12. Collapsing Star
  13. Cull / Eradicate to proc Voidfall
  14. Devour

Core Gameplay

Soul Fragments are a core part of Devourer’s gameplay loop, they generate Fury, increase damage done through Feast Of Souls, and grant access to Void Metamorphosis. Soul Fragments spawn on the ground, and are collected by either running over them, or by casting Reap.

Consume generates Fury and Soul Fragments, and can be cast while moving.

Reap is an instant cast ability that collects souls from the ground. Fully channeling Void Ray resets the cooldown of Reap (grants 1 charge with Second Helping talented). Devour (empowered Consume) reduces Cull’s (empowered Reap) cooldown by 1 second.

The general gameplay loop outside Void Metamorphosis revolves around generating Fury and souls with Consume, and then spending Fury on Void Ray.

Void Ray has a 3 second channel time, which is reduced by Haste. Outside Void Metamorphosis, it doesn’t have a cooldown, but costs 100 Fury. It has no Fury cost inside Void Metamorphosis, but instead has a cooldown. It stands for a lot of Devourer’s damage and soul generation. Additionally, fully channeling Void Ray is required to activate certain talents, such as Eradicate, Final Breath and Moment Of Craving.

Inside Void Metamorphosis the goal is to keep generating Fury, while getting off as many Collapsing Star, and empowered ability casts off as possible. Void Ray should be pressed on cooldown, if possible.

Since both Void Ray and Collapsing Star have long cast times and require you to stand still when casting, they can be quite punishing. Being positionally aware, and using Shift proactively is important.

Soul Immolation should only be used outside Void Metamorphosis, unless it’s needed for self-healing or self-dispelling a Curse or Disease effect.

Annihilator

Annihilator requires sharp gameplay inside Void Metamorphosis, since it barely does damage outside of it.

The tree focuses on consuming Voidfall to proc Void Meteors. Void Meteors stand for a large portion of your damage and soul generation, especially in AoE.

Outside Void Metamorphosis the goal is to get back into it as fast as possible. That means you will be spending both Soul Immolation charges outside Meta, while spamming Consume until either Void Ray is available, or you are able to proc Voidfall with Reap / Eradicate.

Inside Void Metamorphosis the gameplay is quite straightforward. Cast Void Ray when it’s ready, cast Collapsing Star when it’s available, and cast Cull / Eradicate at 3 Voidfall stacks.

Annihilator plays Devourer's Bite in single target. You want to cast Voidblade at the start of your Void Metamorphosis, and fit a second cast at the end of Meta to maximize cooldowns. In Midnight Season 1, Devourer’s Bite isn’t played because there isn’t a pure single target encounter in any of the raids, making Eradicate the better choice in most scenarios.

Void-Scarred

Void-Scarred gameplay revolves heavily around Burning Blades. The primary way to trigger it is with Cull, which becomes one of the biggest priority buttons as it’s going to stand for most of your damage, along with Collapsing Star. Voidsurge is a core part of the Void-Scarred tree, but with the “caster” talents being as powerful as they are, it’s worth sacrificing talents that grant Voidsurges.

The goal is to line up your damage amplifiers, Student Of Suffering and Devourer's Bite, and then cast Collapsing Star and Cull in those windows. This sequence is often going to look like this:

  1. Pierce The Veil
  2. Void Ray
  3. Collapsing Star
  4. Cull
  5. Cull

There is a Void-Scarred build that doesn’t play with Apex Talents. Instead it opts for all of the left side ‘’melee’’ talents, such as The Hunt. This talent build leans heavily into Burning Blades, Cull and Voidsurge as damage sources. It does amazing burst damage, and uses Soul Glutton over Emptiness for more frequent Void Metamorphosis windows.

Defensives

Devourer has solid survivability with two Blur charges, passive self-healing with Soul Rending and consuming souls, and passive magic damage reduction in Demonic Wards.

First In, Last Out provides a small decaying absorb shield after using Shift, so this can also be used to survive big damage events.

Demon Muzzle provides great passive magic damage reduction in situations where interrupting casts with Disrupt is possible. This makes it an amazing defensive tool in Mythic+.

Demon Hunters have access to Darkness, which historically isn’t the best raid defensive cooldown due to the RNG nature of it. However, with Midnight introducing more rot damage encounters than what we’ve seen in recent times, Darkness becomes slightly stronger, as the likelihood of it proccing is higher when there’s more damage events happening.
