Playstyle & Rotation
Devourer doesn’t have a set rotation, but follows a priority system, which can change in Void Metamorphosis.
Void-Scarred Single Target Priority
29.01.25 tuning notes: In single target, Void-Scarred builds no longer cast Void Ray outside of Void Metamorphosis. Consume is by far the best soul generator, and your main goal is to get into Void Metamorphosis as quickly as possible. In Void Metamorphosis and with multiple targets, you still want to cast Void Ray when available.
Reap got buffed massively, and its empowered version Cull is now basically used on cooldown. The general rotation inside Metamorphosis (when everything else is on cooldown) will be to cast Devour twice, then Cull.
For Annihilator builds, you will still cast Void Ray outside Void Metamorphosis, due to it guaranteeing a stack of Voidfall.
Outside Void Metamorphosis:
- Cast Consume until 46 souls
- Reap if it grants access to Void Metamorphosis
- Voidblade
- The Hunt
Inside Void Metamorphosis:
- Cull with 4 souls on the ground
- Vengeful Retreat if buffed by Voidstep
- Reaper's Toll
- Pierce The Veil
- Predator's Wake
- Void Ray
- Devour
Void-Scarred AoE Priority
Outside Void Metamorphosis:
- Vengeful Retreat if buffed by Voidstep
- Hungering Slash

Devourer doesn’t have a set opener due to not being able to cast Void Metamorphosis instantly. However, I’ve provided examples of how an opener should look like in the beginning of an encounter.

Core Gameplay
Soul Fragments are a core part of Devourer’s gameplay loop, they generate Fury, increase damage done through Feast Of Souls, and grant access to Void Metamorphosis.
Consume generates Fury and Soul Fragments, and can be cast while moving.
Reap is an instant cast ability that collects souls from the ground.
The general gameplay loop outside Void Metamorphosis revolves around generating Fury and souls with Consume, and then spending Fury on Void Ray. Hungering Slash is another tool for generating resources, but currently only gets picked for Void-Scarred builds.
Inside Void Metamorphosis the goal is to keep generating Fury, while getting off as many Collapsing Star, and empowered ability casts off as possible. Void Ray should be pressed on cooldown, if possible.
Since both Void Ray and Collapsing Star have long cast times and require you to stand still when casting, they can be quite punishing. Being positionally aware, and using Shift proactively is important. If cancelled, Collapsing Star doesn’t refund the 30 souls, therefore being an enormous damage loss.
Defensives
Devourer has solid survivability with two Blur charges, passive self-healing with Soul Rending and consuming souls, and passive magic damage reduction in Demonic Wards.
Demon Hunters have access to Darkness, which historically isn’t the best raid defensive cooldown due to the RNG nature of it. However, with Midnight introducing more rot damage encounters than what we’ve seen in recent times, Darkness becomes slightly stronger, as the likelihood of it proccing is higher when there’s more damage events happening.
