Boss Strategy

This guide focuses on the Heroic Onu, Ancient of Lore encounter in Darkshore but also works for the normal version.

heroic onu ancient of lore map

Minis in Onu’s army

  • Banshee - Unholy Frenzy
  • Chain Lightning - Storm’s Reach
  • Harpies - Talon Dive
  • Huntress - Darnassian Steel
  • Murloc Tidehunters - Morelocks
  • Prowler - Pack Leader
  • Spiderlings - Envenom

Other minis and map mechanics

Onu summons special Ancients of War, who in turn summon more minis if they live:

  • The left lane Ancient of War is summoned at 3:30 and then every 90 seconds (2:00, 0:30)
  • The mid lane Ancient of War is summoned at 3:30 and then every 45 seconds (2:45, 2:00, 1:15, and so on) - Heroic only
  • The right lane Ancient of War is summoned at 2:45 and then every 90 seconds (1:15)
  • Effectively, two Ancients spawn every 45 seconds: one always in the middle and the other alternating between left and right

Onu, Ancient of Lore:

  • 7800 health
  • Resistant (the exact opposite of the Leader Onu)
  • Aggro range 10
  • Melee: 500 Physical damage, 2.5 seconds attack speed, can hit both ground and flying minis

Ancient of War:

  • 3600 health
  • Vulnerable to Siege damage (+100% Siege damage taken)
  • Melee: 220 Siege damage, 2.5 seconds attack speed, can hit both ground and flying minis
  • Spawns 3 Spiderlings after 5 seconds and then every 105 seconds
  • Spawns 3 Harpies after 40 seconds and then every 105 seconds
  • Spawns a Prowler after 75 seconds and then every 105 seconds

General strategy

Onu itself is not that hard because it only has a fairly slow single-target attack, so one good strong push can usually handle it.

Attack towards Onu through the left lane. You will meet the initial Ancients on the way and take care of them, which will give you enough time to beat Onu.

The main variation in the opener comes from Onu’s Huntress play. There are three main variations: either a Huntress closely follows the middle Ancient, Huntress comes far behind the middle Ancient, or Onu does not get a Huntress early at all.

If a Huntress follows the middle Ancient right behind it, you can play your tanks at the bottom of the left deployment zone and then play your ranged damage dealers at the top of the left deployment zone. This will result in the Huntress shooting at your tanks so that the glaives cannot bounce to your ranged minis, who in turn will deal splash damage to the Huntress.

The hardest scenario is the one where the Huntress follows far behind the middle Ancient. Then it remains outside of the splash radius of your ranged damage dealers and can wreak havoc on your army. I like to include a Worgen solely to ambush the Huntress in this case.

Harpies are the only flying minis in Onu’s army, so I usually do not use many anti-air minis. Make sure your army is ready for them if you have a limited number of counters.

If your push through the left goes well, you manage to take down the Ancients and Onu will fall to your initial assault.
