Boss Strategy
This guide focuses on the Heroic Grommash Hellscream encounter in The Barrens but also works for the normal version.
Minis in Grommash Hellscream’s army
- Dark Iron Miner - Dwarven Ambition
- Darkspear Troll - Serpent Sting
- Execute - Overpower
- Harpies - Infectious Swipes
- Ogre Mage - Frostfire Bolt
- Raptors - Strength in Numbers
- Warsong Grunts - Command
Other minis and map mechanics
When you engage Grommash, he will Bloodlust all of his allies. In Heroic, all of Grommash’s allies are permanently Bloodlusted.
Grommash will periodically summon Warsong Raiders (with Razing Focus talent in Heroic):
- In Normal and Heroic, two Raiders spawn at 3:07 (bottom right and top left) and they will then respawn individually 60 seconds after they are killed.
- In Quests and Surges, one spawns at the bottom right at 3:07 and one will spawn at the top left at 1:47. New ones will spawn in both locations 120 seconds after they are killed.
Grommash Hellscream:
- 6760 health
- Melee (cleave): 220 Physical damage, 1.7 seconds attack speed, 2.5 range, 120 degrees arc, 5 radius,Grommash gains +10% attack speed with every hit, up to +50%, cannot hit flying minis
- Axe Throw: 130 Physical damage, 1.8 seconds attack speed, 5 range, only hits flying minis
- Global Bloodlust (Normal): When an enemy comes within 9 range of Grommash, he will grant Bloodlust to all his allies within a radius of 100. In Heroic, the Global Bloodlust is permanent and always active.
General strategy
First, you need to defend against Grommash’s initial assault, including the Warsong Raiders at 3:07 that will refuse to fight your minis and head straight for your base.
Note that you usually have some time at the start to play minis that may influence what the boss decides to do. If you get a rough opener, try to vary things a little and see if you can bait the boss into making moves that are better for you. If you have an Unbound mini in your opening hand, you can try to grab one of the chests at the start. Keep picking up chests throughout the fight.
The Warsong Raiders deal damage to Barracks fast. You can try to stun them or steal them. Stealing one with a Banshee and stunning the other with Defias Bandits is an effective way to handle them.
After you have survived the start, attack the Tower in the middle and then attack Grommash from there. Keep an eye on the clock and be ready to stop the next set of Raiders.
